The Howa 1500 Mini Action

The Howa 1500 Mini Action in 223 are on sale at Cabelas ( see bulletin this site).
Any thoughts ? I have a 700 in 223 and not to happy with it. Mainly for a truck gun .
Thanks
John.

I've been waiting on someone to come out with a decent stock for the mini actions. Once they brought out the 6.5 Grendel version, I figured it would be the perfect action to build another 6 RAT boltgun on. I built one on a CZ527 several years ago, using the carbine version in 7.62x39 to get the correct boltface. Pulled the OEM 7.62 bbl & replaced it with a Krieger 24" #4 sporter that I chambered in 6 RAT, replaced the OEM set trigger with a JARD unit, and mounted a Sightron Big Sky 4.5-14x44 scope. It's a pretty little rifle, just right for carrying on long walks, and is accurate. But the Mauser-style extractor prevents one from chambering rounds with 105-107gr bullets seated out longer for best accuracy that won't fit in the factory magazine, so I'm limited to running 87-90gr bullets out of the mag.

I've got one of the 6.5 Grendel bbl'd actions, along with another in 222. Am planning on chambering a 1-9tw Bartlein #2 sporter in 20VarTarg for it. I've already got the brand new 222 bbl pulled, and am about ready to start in on the 20VT bbl. Just can't get too excited about it until I have a stock in hand to use... I think these little actions will be hugely popular if & when someone comes out with a good stock for them - they're just about perfectly proportioned to use for both the 20VT & 6 RAT.

Is the action and barrel carbon steel on the standard Howa and the Mini action ? Does anyone make a carbon steel or stainless steel trigger guard ?

Yes, chrome moly. No steel bottom metal that I'm aware of. Be aware that the Mini is pretty a short action so bullets have to be seated pretty much to SAAMI specs.

Several aluminum bottom metals available. Not aware of any in steel. Makes for a fun little budget gun in a Stocky’s stock. Seems most use the VG. For a smaller, lighter, trimmer gun the classic stock is nice.
