The Great War WWI

With the year ending and 2018 starting we are entering the last year of WWI 100 years ago. Many of you may not know but there is a YouTube channel called The Great War. It is a Week by week run down of the war. Each week they also cover topics from the war such as uniforms, people, tools and such.

Here in the US we tend to mainly focus on the western front but this channel covers the whole war not just the western front.

Mother's Family 001-001.JPG My grandfather, Zennie Barron was a veteran of WWI and served in France and fought in the trenches there. He died in 1975 and I regret that I did not take the opportunity to talk with him more about his experiences in that war. He is shown as the boy standing in the back with his family. This picture was taken in ~1900 and Papaw was drafted when he was 28 years old.

It is amazing how they did what they did with the gear they had. I was able to use some WWII gear and what a handicap it was. When I went back to my issue ALICE gear I almost felt like superman.

In the 1970’s I visited with a WWI veteran who was a member of our church. I asked him to describe the experience and share a few stories. Fellas, I’m telling you those men experienced pure hell.

My maternal grandfather was a member of the 40&8 in France. The unit denotes the last US Cavalry Soldiers to fight in combat on horses until the recent Horse Soldiers story.
When they arrived in France, they were transported to the front in box cars. The lettering on the cars "Forty and Eight" referred to the fact that there were forty horses and eight soldiers per car.
He was a farrier, as were the other five, and two veterinarians.

I read a lot of books about WWI, WWII, and Korea. Watch all the documentaries and have come to believe that those who served in these conflicts were all part of an extended "Greatest Generation". The hardships endured by parents and grandparents oin these conflicts can only be really appreciated by those who have fought in the trenches or front lines, land or water. So called modern warfare is certainly no easier on our troops with the advancements in weaponry. I Salute all that have served past, present, and future.
