The Great Powder Shortage of 2020 is upon us

Out of curiosity I went to the LGS and scored a jug of Varget... Last one on the shelf so I bought it..
He said it has been busy the last few days. He sold 4 jugs of RL-16 in just a couple hours after he set them out..
I talked to Western Powder today to ask about Alliant AR Comp powder. She said the haven't received any powder from Alliant since March.

Supply chains are fragile. The bean counters have extracted all the inventory and pushed it to the bottom line (cash flow). There are no warehouses with vast quantities of inventory. J.I.T (Just in Time) is the reason supply chains are fragile. Thank the bean counters that came up with that 30 years ago.

I have been stocking up certain powders and primers for quite awhile. Not that I have ridiculous amounts or anything. I will say I was in a local sporting goods store the other day and I was extremely surprised at the amount of powder they had on hand. Of course I was looking for AR COMP for my Grendel and they did not have any. They even still had some large rifle primers.

They had MR2000 which I almost bought cause I really like it and have lots of heavy bullet .223 loaded with it., but I have multiple pounds of Varget, RL-15, CFE 223, BL-C2, XBR 8208, RL-10x, RL-22, 7828 SSC, H4350,....

I might have 48 pounds total or a little more, and unless something changes that much will last me quite a long time. I bet I have never loaded more than 10 pounds in a year.

All my LGS's are selling all their powders around $40 a pound now. So, I go online and pay for 8lb. jugs as it mitigates the hazmat. I use a lot of powder anyway so it's hard for the LGS's to keep up with what I shoot.

So, I asked what the deal was with powder price increases. I'm hearing from them, they don't get any kind of bulk discounts anymore. I'm thinking they see online prices and price their powder just a little bit less than online so it makes it worthwhile to small-time loaders to get it from them. If there is a sale, I buy locally. If I want to test a new powder and only want one pound, I buy locally.

Added: If you know what you want, or an alternative, you can get some real scores. In the past six months I have bought 8Lb. jugs of Norma 201, VV-160, WC-842, and AA #2 all for $150 each. Then shipping and hazmat.

The political season started early this year, the thread started way back in March. This could get much worse. I live in a battle ground state. Where I see way to many of the wrong yard signs and way to few of the correct version. I hope this my personal version of football, where we are down by 6, on our own 20, and a minute left. I no longer watch pro football, which is saying a lot for me. I grew up watching the Lombardi Packers and have considered many times throwing the TV through the front window. My wife now watches old British TV show on public television, while I nap, wrapped in my blanket.

"The owner of my LGS is now selling Winchester small rifle primers for $15.00 per 100."

I would never support him again!

Well if Trump is re-elected, this too shall pass.

Well maybe, because if he wins, the country will be in such turmoil, that those with the means will be buying for the Armageddon that is sure to follow. Same goes, if he is able to get his next Supreme Court appointment, through the Senate. I live in a pretty calm area of Maryland, but I know several store owners have bought supplies to board up their stores.

My local gun store can't keep enough weapons in his store and he tells me the wholesalers are out of inventory. He will only sell certain handgun ammo if you buy a pistole and then only one box per purchase. This crap is getting serious. I thank God I have enough on hand to last me years.

Don't advertise this, or it will soon be scarce.

I tell you what Nick, I plan on buying the exact order next month if it's there, and if it not at least I got some. I don't think reloader's are in the dark that powder primers and bullets are hard to get in most parts of the country.

A young man that I invited to the range as a guest yesterday sent his wife to go pick up 100 primers for him from our LGS at $15.00. He's a fairly new reloader. He asked me and my buddy if we knew how scarce srp were. We both said yes and said we had a some, then he asked if we would like to sell some. We where reluctant to say yes. Myself because 1, I'm not giving up my CCI 450's and I'd never ran S&B's in a gas gun. Well low and behold, I found an extra 1000 Winchester srp in the back of my cabinet. I will sell him 100 - 200 for a few bucks.

I was talking about how good Shooters World is. I bought some to try and found that the their Precision powder was a good substitute for Vargat. I mean a very good substitute. You have to adjust the load a few .01ths but I really like it and it is cheap as hell.

I'm still lacking about 150-170 pounds to burn out the current barrels I'm shooting. About 20,000 srp and a few bullets. Then I can start on the , oh heck, it's a vicious cycle......

Yep, back in the Jimmy Carter days when interest rates hit 20% they discovered 53' trailers going up and down the highway were all the warehouse inventory you need. Once it goes from the dock into the trailer they have no tax on it also, two things that make a big difference to the bottom line.
