The Forgotten Cartridges

bozo699,
I remember in my early teen years my father bought a fully camo'd, sporterized 7.7 Jap to use as an upgrade for his old 30-30. I believe the rifle cost him about $100.00 but little did he realize that loaded ammo back then was only available from Norma and cost about $30.00/box. After Pop bought his Jap he allowed me to use his 30-30 when we went deer hunting. I shot a few deer with the old 30-30 and a couple that got away. In my mind I needed more horsepower.
A couple years after Pop bought his I found out that my great Uncle had one still in full military condition. I used to enjoy visiting my Great Uncle just to talk hunting stories and guns in general, he was a great conversationist, and comedian. He knew I was at a coming of age, graduating from tree rat hunting to deer hunting and needed a rifle that would put them down handily. I think he finally got tired of me pestering him to see his Jap rifle when ever I came over and accepted my Stevens 20ga single shot as an even trade for the old Jap.
I managed save up enough money to have a smith lop off the front site and cut the bolt. I did the wood work that was necessary and gave it a hand rubbed oil finish.
Shortly after I shot up a couple boxes of bullets, Pop bought me an RCBS basic reloading kit that I still use.
That old rifle was my introduction into reloading and I'm thankful for it.
Typing this up brings back some good memories.

Dave D show us a picture of that jap. I wish I could figure out how to put pics on here as I have a sporterized jap in 6.5.What a great shooter. With cast bullets it will shoot real tight with peep sights.

Jon,
Sad to say that gun was stolen about 13 years ago. Never to be seen again. I still have the brass, dies, and bullets just in case Pop ever needs some loaded ammo.

Hey guys,

Care to share your favourite cartridges that have been 'forgotten' over the decades.

I know the 225 winchester is one, and for me personally, it has to be the 6.5x55 swedish. Give it another 100 years and it'll be entirely confined to history books and collectors. Not even Ruger or Winchester chamber it anymore here in Australia. The 8mm Mauser is another in the same class.

Dave d I am sorry to here some pile of garbage has stolen you 6.5 jap rifle. They are hard to find now.I just bought 200 norma 6.5 cases for myself and intend to shoot the heck out of it this summer.

Would like to have been able to buy a Win 71 in .348win and have it moded to .450 Alaskan. .32-20 winchester is another fine lever action round. Colt even made a few Peacemakers in .32-20...

Always fun to browse Barnes' Cartridges Of The World...

My Father's Uncle was an Army pistol instructor during WWI. His ctg of choice in the Colt DA revolver was .41 Long Colt. Had a nickel finished gun s/n 777 that was stolen in the mid-70s. 200gr Lubaloy bullets. A true .38cal bore. Not like its a great ctg, but it was a cool revolver with mother of pearl grips...

Always intrigued by the .22 Jet. Oshman's Sporting Goods had one for years in the presentation case with spare cylinder; right next to a couple MBA GyroJet pistols. First Caseless ammunition IIRC.

Other forgotten ctgs. How about the .30 Luger and the .30 Steyr or Bergman which was even hotter. Nope am not browsing the Barnes for ideas either...

Used to be some .303 Savage ammo in my grandparents' attic, but never knew of a rifle the family owned for it. Did have a single shot .44cal shotgun, that took paper crimped into .44 russian sized brass.

Seems like the .375 Winchester is a dead item along with the .32-20 and the .32 and .30 Rem Specials.

Didn't Charlie Askins win a centerfire pistol title one year using the 5.7 Velo Dog? It was a centerfire .22 and an autoloader. He used the rules to beat all the guys shooting .32 and .38 revolvers on bullseye course.

hogan,
They may have recently quit making the .375 winchester but I bought a brand new bigbore94 off the shelf just a few years ago. What a great brush gun for close range black bear.
Wayne.

Hogan I actually have a stevens .44 shot shotgun with a couple cartridges for it. Never seen another one in my life. What about the .577 snyder conversion ,there were tons of them on the market in the 1960's.

Howdy Jon! Speaking of surplus imports from the 60s, how about the Spanish carbines that fired the "Destroyer" ctg? Then there were the 9mm Largo Astra autos, the pistols that looked like a heavy barreled Ruger mkII with a Rem model 8 muzzle. Astra 400/600? Big clunky, but cool looking also. Kind of like the French MAB pistol.

Speaking of big pistols, what about Auto-Mag guns & their ctgs?

Actually, the 250-3000 was mentioned earlier is about the "perfect ctg". Have a 6mm International with AI shoulder in an AR-10 upper. Just wish it had been a 6.5... Not really much in the way of match bullets for the .25cal, are there? Guess could get dies and jackets and make your own, but easier to go 6.5mm...

Used to love the ctg section in Gun Digest as a kid, also the old-man had a 1940s Bannerman catalog and they had ctg drawings for every obscure thing back to the 11.75mm Egyptian rolling block and maybe even needle fire guns. Bannerman Catalog was great fun.

6.5x55 rules ! Judging by the comments here, it will NOT die. Rifle companies take note !! .222...sweet shooters, waay better than .223. .35 Rems still roam the woods here in Pa. T/C helped lengthen it's life with the Contender. Killed my last deer with it ! Also have a cherry Rem 141 spiral pump in 35 Rem. Great freezer filler.

Good effort with belting that neck on the 7x61,

that's so it headspaces from that belt rather than the belt at the bottom right? How exactly do you do that?

My first post and I'd have to drop 32 Winchester Special as a forgotten cartridge that does a great job on deer.

I also use 6.5 JAP and 7.7 JAP rifles as well that does great work as well.

Bruce,
Welcome to the forum. I have the rifles you mentioned and like them very much, especially the 7.7, very accurate
