The finer points of bag sand

dcali

I've always just filled my bags with whatever sand was available, and once I got some heavy sand from Sinclair that was just a few ounces short of filling my bag...

I've got some new bags on order so I thought it might be a good time to delve into the intricacies of different types of sand and how they are packed for Benchrest and/or F Class.

Surely some of you have some experience testing this sort of thing.

Depending on the shape, weight, and size of the grains, different kinds of sand perform differently in bags. Generally, I do not put heavy sand in front bags, the ears of rear bags, or in any bag that I will be holding while I shoot. Recently, speaking with the fellow that I bought my Seb version of a gator bag from he mentioned mixing heavy and regular sand. I forget the proportion, but at the time I tried to do what he had suggested and I like the result. Generally, my goal is to have a stable bag without having to pack it too tight. Some years ago this was published on the 6mmBR site. https://www.6mmbr.com/sandcomparison.html

I don’t know if this is right or not but it seems to work ok. I got heavy sand in the rear bag but regular beach sand in the ears. Then I got regular beach sand in the front rest bag but not packed very tight. Heavy sand can make your rear bag weigh at least 50% more.
