The dredded recoil lug

That is why I surface grind and use the factory recoil lugs.

This is on one of my heavy kickers-450 Ackley Magnum. The receiver was annealed, the lug I machined was tig welded with 4 very small welds. When all work was done, it was reheat treated.

I've done the same thing minus the heat treat and TIG. I soldered it on with force 44, it didn't budge when the 460Wby broke the stock.

How did you control absolute uniformity at this critical joint or did you face the lug after soldering it to the action...or what?

I left it proud and faced it. I also set one back to see if it made a difference, I left the action proud by .060-.070". It didn't make a difference, but these were hunting rifles with big holes down the barrel.
