The dredded recoil lug

the pinning thing is bad. You are just giving it a place to break, period!. Think hoop strength.

Thinking out of my box, has anyone done a couple tig tacs to secure position of lug?
Been thinkin about this for some years and I see nothing.

Will it impart stress if just spot welded or are people worried of breakage?!

Option 2-
Larger diameter pin in recoil lug w/ a milled slot in front receiver ring at 6 o'clock, trumps 2 smaller diameter pins in lug & 2 longitudinal blind holes in front receiver ring.

Option 3-
Fusion TIG'd lug if your set-up is correct.

I'm not grasping the milled slot idea. How does that work? Do you need a corresponding slot in the lug? Thanks

Later--So the pin goes through the lug and seats in the slot in receiver? What is the advantage of that over a hole in the receiver for the pin?

Have you ever seen a recoil lug break? I haven't.

I`m more concerned with the pin / or pins shearing in a switch barrel rifle.....

Is my concern warranted, or a waste of time?????

I want to be able to switch barrels with the action in the stock, like an action without the lug....

Phil.

P.S....I have not ever seen a recoil lug break, I have however seen the pin shear..

I tigged the lug on one of my XP's years ago with no problem...
Pin a lot of lugs and never had one shear from changing barrels..
If they are bedded all the way around, they can hardly shear when removing a barrel..

That makes more sense. I do like the idea of two pins, but I've never sheared one one, either.

I'm not so concerned of pin sheer but the weakening of the reciever. I see that custom actions use them so I'm sure it's fine but looks like a weak spot to me.
Good discussion though!!

I have an older 700 action with a tigged lug. I didn't do it, but have changed barrels many times with no problems. Barrels all shot good too

What other options are there? Isn't there some kind of jig that aligns the recoil lug with the action?

Yes, there is a jig that aligns the lug to the action when installing a barrel.
But trying to get t it back in the exact same bedded place within the stock when the barrel is removed is a problem.
Pinning the lug prevents that..

If you are paying good money for a bedding job and ever have to change the barrel you will need to rebed the rifle if the lug is not pinned. You will never get it in the exact same place. I charge $100 to indicate the action drill and ream 2 3/32 holes and install recoil lugs I get from Jim Borden which is included in the price. The fit of his lugs are so good you would think it was part of the action. Its bedding insurance how I see it.
I have a lot of faith in Jim's work. Most factory lugs are horrible and most aftermarket ones, that are sold as being flat..aren't. Check em'.

That is why I surface grind and use the factory recoil lugs.

This is on one of my heavy kickers-450 Ackley Magnum. The receiver was annealed, the lug I machined was tig welded with 4 very small welds. When all work was done, it was reheat treated.
