The difference in neck turners?

I have been turning brass for 30yrs. with an old Hart neck turner and it still does a very nice job but it is a monumental task to get the thing adjusted. When cases used to cost $0.12 a piece I didn't mind throwing a half dozen away until the turner was finally set to where I wanted it but at $1.00 or more, the time has come to upgrade and I would like to hear which turners are the easiest to accurately adjust and hold the tightest tolerances.

Hi ChuckHunter,

I have the sinclair 4000, I really like it....I haven't used any other turners.

Started out 12 years ago with the basic Sinclair NT-1000, then went to the K&M. recently bought the Sinclair NT-4000, and in my opinion, it is the best of the three. Seems to have been designed by someone who actually turns necks.

Sinclair has the best 'system', which makes all the difference in turning.
That system being; proper mandrel expansion w/die(including carbide now), adjustable turner with different shoulder angle cutters(30/40deg), & neck thickness mic.
Who else has all this without borrowing on Sinclair?

Chuckhunter,
+ 1 for me also on the sinclair nt-4000. I have only been turning necks for a year or so now so I am no expert by any means , first I bought a rcbs I got just what I expected, its like most everything else they make, then bought the sinclair ,a Lee case holder that chucks in a drill the combo works AWESOME!!

Thanks for all of the input I really thought that the odds on favorite would be either the K+M or the pumpkin, but it appears as though most of you prefer the Sinclair #4000 so I will research that one a little further. Oh by the way Lamar, if you had my money, you would be using a 30yr. old Hart and setting it up with 40yr old brass but I might take you up on your offer to try the K+M.

Just wondering if anyone has used the Stiller Neck Turner and has any opinions. It looks similar to the pumpkin but is a lot less expensive. (Quiet Lamar)

Chuck:

Like another poster indicated, I don't believe the Stiller is being made at this time. The Neilson Pumpkin is indeed the very top of the line and will cut your necks like glass. The K&M does well and they are priced such that you can have one for each chambering -- BUT DON'T GET THE DONUT CUTTER CASE KILLER MANDREL.

Thanks for the advice Jim, my friend Lamar has a K&M that he's willing to let me try, so I'll do that first. Greg, you may be right, I read about the Stiller in the gear review section but couldn't find anything about it on their website. The Sinclair #4000 is currently out of stock. I do believe it will be either the #4000 or the pumpkin. I guess I really couldn't go wrong with either one.

I would like to thank everyone who steered me in the direction of the Sinclair #4000 Neck Turner. It cuts like butter and adjustment is extremely easy. As someone stated, it appears to have been designed by someone who actually turns necks. I couldn't be happier. Thanks again.

I'm using the basic Sinclair with the Lee holder in a drill, I cut inward slow but turn the rpm up higher while backing out quite slow and I get necks that look amazing. I also use a lot of lube on the mandrel to help eliminate any binding or chatter and it allows me to be that much more precise with my feeding. Your cutter's edge, cutter speed and feed rate are what will determine what your finished looks like. Practice with some garbage brass first if you can to try and get the hand 'wobble' down too.
