The best Chronograph

Oehler... and they are making the model 35 again, for come first serve. http://www.oehler-research.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.15.exe/online-store/scstore/p-M35-P.html?L+scstore+fnfq8851ffefcdef+1288567488

Pact I comes with large screens and everything you need for $129.99.
No printer to break.
Does everything you need it to unless you're going to chronograph in the dark.

+ 1 on the oehler 35p. I bought the pact w/infrared and printer, it is very picky on setup. to many miss reads for $249.99.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't quite ready to spend $600.00 on one, but the unit mentioned above is fine!

Any other less expensive models?

I think I have owned most of the Chrony's offered on the market. The one before my current model was the Oehler 35P which was a good unit. But then I bought the PVM-21. Without a doubt the BEST chrony out there. The cons; PRICE!!
I forget where I've seen this quote on the forum,,, but, "buy the best and cry once". :)
It's worth the money if it's in your budget. And, it comes with QuickLoad.

Take a look at the ProChrono. Nice wide field and super easy to use. Accurate and relatively inexpensive.

I have been using a CED and am very pleased. I really like that it stores all of the strings and when I get home I download the data to my computer. It makes going back and looking up load data very easy.

TheBlueEyedBear: yes, the PVM-21 is expensive, but if you knock the Quickload app price off the total ante you're paying just a bit more than what one of the new 35P Systems'll cost.

Perhaps having the connectivity a PVM-21 enables to output directly into Quickload is a distinct advantage at this price point. But then you also need a PC laptop too (or an Intel Mac Book Pro running Windows) to take the software along with to the range.

I get reliable results from my 35P for what I paid for mine. At the same time I'm sure there are "better" tools out there... for a price!

I have the Chrony Gamma Master. I've been very pleased with it, especially the convenience of the printer. The printer allows me to fire and forget, so to speak. I can shoot 20 10 round groups, file the paper tapes between groups, and sort it all out at home.

Probably the best answer is "The one that tells you how fast your bullet is going."

It depends on what you want the chrono for.

If you are just looking for quick velocity checks, a shooting chrony is fine and is great for something small that can be quickly set-up.

If you are wanting more valid data, the Oehler 35p with triple screens is the way to go, but it costs considerably more than a shooting chrony.

The PVM-21 is the high end, not sure at this point if it is worth the few hundred extra dollars over an Oehler 35p.

would someone who knows about this please reply. I have a crony---when I can get it to read, it works great, BUT it only seems to work on a whim. I have had it work in full sun, partial sun/shade, full shade. I have tried several colors of paper shades including the plastic ones it came with. I cannot find a consistent time when it works(other than it does seem to work during heavy cloud cover) and I've tried everything---I just leave it setup and go down on my 4-wheeler several times a day with a .22 and shoot across it---when it reads, I do some testing. I have read all the directions and nada seems to help. My friends blue one is the same. Will the PVM 21? work always???? i even got my tractor out to hold a tarp up at a distance to no avail. thanks.

TX65,
I agree 100% with your statement, for the hunter or average target shooter the inexpensive chrony works just fine, I used one for years. although I have used a borrowed 35p alot and it is useless early in the morn. and @ dusk or when cloudy other than that they work great! But for $550 or so that is a lot of ifs in the weather or time of day. I bought the pact w/infrared it works great when the 35p will not,BUT it is extremly picky on set up, a fraction of a inch one way or the other and you get no reads >:( If I had to do it all over again I would look hard @ the pvm-21. I personally like to shoot when there is no or little wind hence,
(early in the am,the calm before the storm, or in the evening hours.) In my experience you almost have to have infrared for that :-\

okie,
Chrony's can be agravating @ very best.I got sso mad @ my last chrony beta I lowered the muzzle about 5" and blew it off the tri pod >:( ( I know real smart huh)
Well that is just how agravating they can be!!! Have you tried removing your deflectors alltogether? I found sometimes that helped.
Wayne.

yes!!! I have indeed tried almost everything. On TWO units. I would pay for the Oehler or PVM-21 if they will work whenever. You know how it is--I have very limited times to shoot and I need one to work when I have the opportunity to shoot. thanks for any input

Wayne---I almost shot mine two weekends ago---I left it set up all weekend and I could never get it to read.
