The 220 is still swift

Great thread! I have always used 55 grain BT's in my standard Swifts over a stout charge of H414. I like to run em hot and stay above that magical 4,000 fps marker. The results on chucks are devastating. The only .22 cartridge that I have seen that puts 10-12 pound chucks up in the air a few feet. Even better on crows as mentioned. There is not much bullet drop out to 350 yards. Over that I'll click it up a few clicks. The smile factor is off the charts!

Over 4000fps with H414 and a 55gr seems toasty! I have had great results with 414, but lost a primer once on a hot day and a max charge.
I'm a fan of 4007SSC @ 43.0gr and 50gr v max. I've tried everything- RL15, RL 17, IMR 4064, N160, H380, IMR 4350, IMR 4831, AA 2700.

It is toasty, this was in my M70 Winchester heavy varmint with the factory stainless Schneider 14 twist 26 inch long barrel that i bought brand new in mid 90's. I used 44.0 grains H414 under a 55 BT in Winchester brass and was right at 4,030 fps. Shot that barrel out and had a Broughton barrel 13 twist screwed on in same profile and still using same bullet but max charge i can go is 42.9 grains of H414 in Norma brass good for 3,877 fps. Anything over that is sticky bolt lift and ejector marks on case head. New chamber is a match chamber and i was wrong going with the 13 twist barrel. If you want speed stay with a 14 twist in the mighty Swift. Totally different rifle with the new barrel i had put on but its very accurate!!!

I did try some 53 V-max bullets last summer and rifle did not like them. I figured the Swift would drive them fast enough with a 13 twist to be accurate but they were not. Hornady recommends a 12 twist.

Gary, that is (like about all coopers that I've seen) a NICE looking rifle. And for varminting, you couldn't have picked a better round than the Swift. I'm on my 3rd one in my lifetime and never plan to be without one. I've used 50gr NBT and 50gr Vmax out of my 14 twist Shilen barreled one that I have now. Similar to 40x guy, this one really likes ww760 (same or similar to H414) and it gives consistently over 4000fps and highly acceptable accuracy. :) Chucks, crows, Pdogs, Jack Rabbits, and coyotes don't mind getting in front of it..... cause it don't hurt very long. ;) It has made acrobats out of many a varmint. :D WD

My Swift, a highly modified 1950's Arisaka with unknown 1.25 inch 24" long barrel has been responsible for several "cranium" launches that put chunk in the air so high that we had time to say, "Hey, what was that that just came down" as it is hit the ground nearby the deceased chuck. It turned one chucks head inside out so badly that it was a foot long, has no insides and looked like a sock peeled off a dirty foot..with eyeballs. Those 55 Vmax moving right along sure speak with authority on big chucks

I'm using the 55 grain Vmax now, but all of the 55 grain plastic tipped bullets @ 3800+ fps have worked great for me over the years. They seem to have a good balance of decent BC and high velocity. The Swift and those explosive bullets have helped me decorate the landscape with cranial contents many times over the years!
Long live the Swift,
Gary

I have a 12 twist 220-AI good for 60/64 gr pills, but i shoot mostly 55s. A bit of back ground on the rifle.
It started out as a Tikka 22-250 m55 action, wooden stock. I later had my gun smith rebarrel it to 22-250 AI, he work the trigger to 4oz, and beaded the action.. I decided to keep the the old tasco 3x9x40 on top. But man did that thing shoot, and many a crow fell to that combo. After that barrel was toast the gun sat in my safe for 8 years not knowing what i was going to do with it...Until about 2 years ago when i decided to get what was called, 220 Wilson arrow. But found no gunsmith had the reamers for it or were interested in getting them for me. And then tried to sell me something i didn't really want.. And i was not interested in that......So i decided to go the hole hog and bought a rougher, finisher and resize reamer in 220 AI 40° shoulder from PTG. I selected a Lilja ss 3-groove 1.200″ .875″ barrel, which meant a new stock to. i liked the tactical look so went with a Mcmillan A5 in desert camo, the stock is not ideal varmint stock for use in a sand bag because of the butt hook but i like it for the wide beaver tail and being able to rest on stuff. I topped it off with a Leupold 6.5x20 x50 in badger mounts. After fire formed some brass i sighted it in and i worked up some loads using RL17, AR2209, AR2213 and AR8208 but settled on RL17 and 2209... When i ran the 55gr load through my chrony, it was right around 4030 fps with 46.5 gr of either 2209 or RL 17. Accuracy was awesome... Anyway i have rabbited on enough, happy day's, love the 220 AI.

I may have to try the Ackley version of swift... Sure looks mean in that picture. Glad it works for you and you're happy being in the "Swift group"!

As an FYI and you may have already figured this out, but you didn't need to buy the rougher reamer.

Yeah i did worked that out, i was sorter left in the dark on that one, it was the first time i had ever purchase reamers for a build..
