That Boyd Allen guy is one smart individual....helpful too.

A couple of months ago I had a thread going here about the load development for my new 6 Dasher. At one point in the conversation Boyd commented on his position at the bench, how he liked to be square behind the butt. I said that I shot off to the side at about a 45 degree angle, which left the butt tucked into the top of my bicep.

Anyway, I was at the range this morning setting up my new Nightforce 12-42x56 scope. When I moved down to the 600 yard targets, I wasn't comfortable with my position. Something just felt wrong with my usual position. Maybe the stool was a little to high, I don't know, but it wasn't right. I fired two 5 shot groups and had more horizontal and vertical than I was used to getting. Not terrible groups, less than 4 inches. But not too sparkling either. And it just didn't feel right.

So, I was wiggling the bench stool around and wound up more square behind the butt. Which put the buttstock squarely into the hollow of my shoulder. Hmmmmm, this don't feel too terribly wrong. It's different, but doesn't feel bad. Better actually; my shoulder is square, right behind the stock, tucked in nice and proper. What the hell, Boyd said this is how he does it. I'll give it a go. Just for grins, you know.

So, I use my normal mount....3 fingers put a few ounces of pressure against my shoulder, an almost unfelt amount of pin against the forearm stop. The left hand on the joystick of the Farley front rest. 5 shots downrange and then look at the screen of my laptop that is running the 600 yard camera. Whoohooo, about 1 1/2 inches of vertical and 3 inches of wind.

Boyd's position cut my vertical in half, maybe a touch more. I just wanted to thank him for his great advice. We are so lucky to have shooters of his skill and eagerness to help us improve our game.

Thanks Boyd.

Thanks for the feedback. You made my day. It''s a good thing that I don't wear hats; I'd be havin' to go up a size.

I must say that Boyd and others have help me so much also. My thanks for all who offer their help to us who are learning. All this for the price of a small voluntery donation. What a site.

I've been reading BoydAllens posts ever since I found this site some 4 yrs ago.
Best shooting web site. IMHO

BoydAllen is a rare individual. He obviously possesses a high level of knowledge and experience, knows how to teach it, AND is apparently willing to take the time to help anyone and everyone.

He's a keeper!

Thanks again BoydAllen, and to the others who jumped in and offered up help when I hit snags with my new reloading equipment. Things are now running smoothly. Better than I imagined. Just got done putting some rounds together for OCW testing. This is getting fun!

You know I am a shame I have been a member here for several years and am proud to say I am a better shooter, loader and person for the people like Boyd A., Germen S., and countless others that freely give there knowledge to people like myself and others and I have never said thanks to not one of them. BUT I TRULY THANK THEM ALL and my apology for not saying it sooner.

Very well put Teufelhunden, over the past couple of years or so Boyd and I have become very good internet and telephone friends, a true friend just have not shook hands is what I mean about that, he hs helped me a lot, not just in gun related things either, I have a bad temper and have lashed out at times, Boyd doesn't take crap well either but he can make you think about the dumb or rude, smart ass thing you just said without being rude or sarcastic doing it, I have a long ways to go but he has helped me so much and he know that I appreciate it and that I am grateful. I think just telling him that in a phone call or p.m while discussing your problems is all the payment he needs and is why he continues giving his knowledge as freely as he does, I have tried to convince him to write a book but I get nowhere with that, I know it would sell as it would be a similar book to Glen Zedikers I think but without all the dry humor, Boyd can be very funny as well as being extremely intelligent, maybe some of you can help me out with my request ( Ha HA ) Don't be embarrassed Boyd by we appreciative friends of your's, we just all share the same thoughts of you and obviously want you to know and others also to know it, there's not many out there like you my friend,....thank you for being my good friend :)

Very sincerely,...your good friend,
Wayne A Bezona.

I agree with the kudos for Boyd Allen. Very smart guy. Very wide range of gun and shooting knowledge. In fact, I've been bugging Boyd for a couple years to consider co-hosting a PodCast for this site. This would be like an old-time radio show -- only distributed via internet audio files. My concept is that it would feature interviews with top shooters such as John Whidden, Gene Bukys, Carl Bernosky, Sam Hall.

If you've ever talked to Boyd, you know he has a well-modulated voice and the "gift of gab". My prompting hasn't provided sufficient motivation for Boyd, but maybe those who have enjoyed his posts in the Forum would enjoy listening to a Boyd Allen podcast. What do you think?

Paul,
This idea of yours would be a marvelous idea, however I know it has fallen on deaf ears (ha ha ) Boyd I am heading out the door for work but you know your getting a phone call from me,..don't you (LOL) you have the perfect voice for it and you wouldn't have to read from a script, as it is already in the old computer banks of your mind, you can do it my friend, spread the knowledge via a podcast for all to hear ;) Awesome Idea Paul, lets work on him!!
Wayne.

I'll give you another tip. I, too, sit square behind the gun. When you are in the sighter period, check and see where the cross hair is pointing when you return the gun to the firing position. Is it left....right...dead on? my fix to the left/right problem.....if the gun is returning to battery and pointing left of the x ring, slide your body/stool slightly to the left and see what happens. If the gun is pointing right of the x, move slightly right. A couple of adjustment early in the sighter period should get you lined up EXACTLY in the right position, freeing up the remainder of the sighter period to concentrate on conditions.

Load development is a big part of shooting small groups, but, when it gets right down to it....shooting small groups under the heat of battle (ie...shooting FAST during a match), bench manners and consistancy are KING.

My .02 only.

And, I concure, Boyd is top notch!!

Just got off the phone with Boyd, just under a hour, I'd say that was about normal for us :) We had a excellent talk and of course I came away a little wiser then before, we talked about many things all gun related of course and we each had a interesting story to tell as well, I really enjoy my phone calls with boyd, we talked on the internet for a couple of years before we ever spoke on the phone, I seldom write directly to him on the forum anymore I see something I want to discuss he has wrote I just call him if he doesn't beat me to the punch, sometimes I think he can read my mind,...today I was just about to call him when the phone wrang,....guess who? Thanks Boyd for all you contribute to the gun world and the time you spend with your friends helping and mentoring to them :)
Your friend,....Wayne.

Boyd does have a way of comming accross in a very gentle but firm manner. I wish I could do that in print...it is a talent that is rare!

Boyd,

My offer is still on the table... drive to my range, show me everything I'm doing wrong, and how to fix everything. I'll buy you lunch, then you can drive back home :)

It's a pretty sweet deal... you shouldn't pass it up. :o

Well put Mark and spot on for me as well, that is how Boyd and I hooked up on the phone to start with, I get so angry sometimes trying to get my point across, then I end up deleting posts and apologizing, I still struggle at times but Boyd has helped me a lot in those regards, there are others that are good, fdshuster, Preacher, Laurie, and others but none are like Boyd, you said it the best I have heard it said,...
a way of coming across in a very gentle but firm manner!! ;)
Wayne.

P.S I see Walt posted while I was writing, same goes for me Boyd, Walt has a excellent idea ;D
