A couple of months ago I had a thread going here about the load development for my new 6 Dasher. At one point in the conversation Boyd commented on his position at the bench, how he liked to be square behind the butt. I said that I shot off to the side at about a 45 degree angle, which left the butt tucked into the top of my bicep.
Anyway, I was at the range this morning setting up my new Nightforce 12-42x56 scope. When I moved down to the 600 yard targets, I wasn't comfortable with my position. Something just felt wrong with my usual position. Maybe the stool was a little to high, I don't know, but it wasn't right. I fired two 5 shot groups and had more horizontal and vertical than I was used to getting. Not terrible groups, less than 4 inches. But not too sparkling either. And it just didn't feel right.
So, I was wiggling the bench stool around and wound up more square behind the butt. Which put the buttstock squarely into the hollow of my shoulder. Hmmmmm, this don't feel too terribly wrong. It's different, but doesn't feel bad. Better actually; my shoulder is square, right behind the stock, tucked in nice and proper. What the hell, Boyd said this is how he does it. I'll give it a go. Just for grins, you know.
So, I use my normal mount....3 fingers put a few ounces of pressure against my shoulder, an almost unfelt amount of pin against the forearm stop. The left hand on the joystick of the Farley front rest. 5 shots downrange and then look at the screen of my laptop that is running the 600 yard camera. Whoohooo, about 1 1/2 inches of vertical and 3 inches of wind.
Boyd's position cut my vertical in half, maybe a touch more. I just wanted to thank him for his great advice. We are so lucky to have shooters of his skill and eagerness to help us improve our game.
Thanks Boyd.
