Texas Department Of Transportation Buys American.......NOT!!

The Texas Dept of Transportation has drydocked one of the large Bolivar Ferry’s at Southwest Shipyard.
It is up for it’s five year ABS refit. We built two spare shafts for the Ferry a while back, they sent two brand new Props over to fit.

I guess there is not a propeller manufacturer in the United States. Take a look at the comp any that furnished these.

At least it’s not Communist China

I think the parent company is in china but they make those props in MS. Im sure you know more about em but i worked on some power distribution for a foundry in ocean springs that made props and they were HS propulsion and had a yard full of props just like that. Could be wrong. Hung shen sure sounds like chicom to me- no wonder the us division called themselves HS

So, one turn of that prop propels the ship six feet and you need 880 turns to go one mile.
Am I close on this. Plus one on the EPA and Foundry's, just not a good match.

Joe brings up a good point. We’ve regulated us right out of many industries. George Biden is trying to take credit for the clean air and we have to do more. How stupid. If you believe in global warming, you have to believe in global pollution. Sure, China and Chinese industries are booming and the same goes for India. They also have the dirtiest air because they don’t have regulations in place for clean air such as in the U.S. There is no happy medium. The Chinese shut down all factories in China for two weeks when they hosted the Summer Olympic Games. My solution for our economy is to have the Olympics every single year in China. They’ll have to shut down every year for at least two weeks every year. Then Jackie can get his propellers in the U.S.

There was a large ship propeller manufacturing/repair shop in Houston, Texas on Navigation Street a long time ago. I drove by it almost daily when I drove a welding supply delivery truck for a living in the early 70's. I haven't been in that area of Houston in years, but I suspect they are still there since there would be so much business on the ship channel the need for their products and services would be constant. Speaking of pollution, when I worked for a large Japanese industrial refrigeration equipment manufacturer my primary supplier of refrigeration lubricant suddenly was out and couldn't supply it any for an indefinite period. In the scramble that followed I discovered that the unit in the plant that made the alkyl benzene lubricant in India had suffered a catastrophic explosion that destroyed it and they produced most of that product used in the world. That plant was located in India due the fact that it is such a dirty process to make alkyl benzene they hadn't been able to manufacture it in the US in decades.

I don't think it's fair to say we regulate the US out of may industries. The fact is that by moving to third world nations, business avoid spending money on environmental safety, but they do that at the expense of the lives of those living around those plants. Remember the massive lethal poisoning by Pesticide manufacturer Union Carbide in Bhopal, India, 1984?

Today in El Paso, TX where a lead plant existed for decades, there exists a great deal of lead dust in the surrounding neighborhoods, and many residents test above acceptable blood levels for lead. This same issue is why lead was removed from gasoline decades ago. Many homes and neighborhoods near major highways were found to be coated in lead dust.

The EPA upgrades environmental laws to prevent deaths, and illness. Exporting those deaths and illnesses to other nations is not the same as preventing them by improving manufacturing methods.

When did it become acceptable that as long as it's not Americans who are dying, it is therefore safe?

Until this administration, China fell into the area of a 3rd World Nation. That meant they got preferable import tax rates. In many cases they paid none or very little import rates. I feel that was all part of the plan to destroy they economy of the U.S. That has all changed now. So maybe some of those jobs will return to the U.S.

$46,912 average salary for a union machinist? Tell them to move to Texas and get into plumbing.
I pay the two helpers on my shop $18 an hour.
Our three top Machinist make $55 straight time. I can’t think of the last time we actually worked a straight time week.
The other 10 employees fall in between there.

i don’t mind telling the world what we give our men.
Their Hourly Wage
7 paid holidays
2 weeks paid vacation
We pay the man’s health insurance.
We furnish their uniforms
45 minute lunch
bonuses at years end, depending on how good of a year we have. The top men can usually expect a $15,000 bonus, the helpers $3000, everyone else in between.

Why?.

Because we trained them all and need them to turn out the quality of work our Customers expect. I cannot get a thing done without the skilled craftsmen in my shop.

Even though by Federal Law we cannot compel our men to work past 40 hours as a requirement of employment, they understand that the business we are in usually means being at our call.
