Testing The New CCI Varmint & Target Ammunition

SGW Gunsmith

"Accipere non casus-Virga Bis"
The other day I tested some newly arrived CCI Mini-Mag ammunition, along with some SK Rifle Match from three of my .22 rimfire rifles:
• CZ 457 MTR
• CZ 457 LUX
• Savage Mark II
Shooting was done at 45 Yards, with three sets of 5 rounds at each "spot"

The CZ 457 MTR seems to have a match chamber. When a round is chambered, the forward most driving band is engraved by the rifling:

This is supposed to be conducive to better accuracy.

I hate to say it but the accuracy from the Savage is really impressive. I have a Savage and its always been a good shooting rifle as well and seems to like the Mini-mags better than any match ammo I have tried in it. I think I'm going to have to try and get some of this Mini-mag target ammo to try in mine. Thanks for the review.

Check the SK web-site, that's what they list for muzzle velocity. I intend to chrono some of that ammunition to actually see for myself, and they list it as being shot out of a 26" barrel.

None of these test rifles have anything done to them as yet, no trigger jobs or bedding. All were tested as they arrived from the distributor I deal with.

I just acquired a new Savage myself, it is the B22 in the MDT Chassis, and I will say this at first it shot Ok but then I starting messing with torque settings on the action screws and that made a huge difference, If you haven't tried that yet do so, it might tighten groups up allot ! I got mine in a really good spot and now I don't touch the screws at all ! But be careful the screws are cheap and I got above 40 in. Lb and the cap of the screw broke right off.

Thanks for that reminder. I checked the trigger pull weight today with a Lyman digital gauge and it averages 2 lbs. 7 oz. after ten pulls. Plan #2 involves "pillar bedding" with aluminum pillars that I turn on the lathe. That way, I really don't need to consider any torque rating as the pillars will just need a turn until it's tight condition. Mine is a laminated stock, so probably the last thing I'll do is "liquid steel" bed the rear tang and area behind the recoil lug to retard any possible movement of the action in the stock, but until then, I will try torqueing that action screws, as you suggest, but, thanks for the lesson as not to go that high:

CCI Mini Mag Target and CCI Mini Mag is the same ammo, the only difference is the packaging, check the item number on the box. This is marketing to get more money out of the same product.
