Testing Pics New stock build

Testing. I'm forcing myself to learn to do this stuff. I think I got it! Only took 4 hrs. These are pics of my first attempt at a stock. I pulled a piece of walnut from the stack my father and I cut down 45 years ago. I was headed for the old Tikka Master Sporter design. Upgraded the forend to an Ebony inlay and added 3", so I could do a little hammer head at the end. It's not finished at the forend, as the ebony is giving me fits and shrinking. Plan is to checker it when it finally stabilizes. It's a 308 5R with the PT&G dbm for AI mags. It't will end up as a 6br or dasher. Not decided yet. I wanted to see how the stock turned out first. Action is completely bedded and pillars. Jewel trigger. KMW Long Range Solutions adjustable cheek piece hardware. Fore end barrel channel will clear an 1 3/8 barrel.

Re: Testing

You might go with a little larger picture. When opening, the pictures is actually smaller than the one posted. You want it to be bigger after opening it.

FOUR HOURS !!! Gimmee a break! I spent 3 months on my 1st stock and it didn't look as good as yours ??? VERY nice work so far. Keep on keepin' on. :)

No, no. It took 4hrs. To try to post pics! I can work with wood but this computer stuff, I can't get. I've been working with wood my whole life. My Grandfather was a boat builder in the Catskills. Used to play in the shop when I was a kid. I went into construction and became a builder/cabinet maker. The hardest thing was to fight the instinct to make everything square. I spent a month's free time on it. Got real lucky with the wood choice, as I grabbed the first piece that was thick enough. I started out thinking I was going to screw the first one up. When I uncovered the grain patterns, I got careful. Thanks for the comment, Paul. Coming from you it means a lot. You work in thousands, and do amazing work. If I screw up, it's filler and sand paper. Got to give some credit to the new set of Swiss carving gouges I bought. Wifey was a bit cross when that bill came in.

I love what you did with the ebony on the fore end. My ebony fore end has stabilized but now with recent high humidity we have had here in CO lately the stock is moving on me. Hope we have a nice dry fall. Wondering if you have any other thick pieces like that. I've always wanted to do a AICS stock made of walnut.

I can check the stack for ya. You did a fine job on that Maple stock. I sure wouldn't mind helping out an up and coming gunsmith.I can't say what kind of grain will show in any piece as it's all still in the rough and won't show till it's planed. What kind of dimensions are ya looking for? Figure it out and get back to me. Josh. PS: Just stay away from those exotic, dangerous chemical finishes. I like Deft Oil. It comes in different shades as well as natural. I used the medium walnut, for a couple coats, then the clear, for the wet sanding.

I'm done with acid's for a while. Think I'm going to stick with my bottle of TungOil till that runs out then try something new. Will send you a PM with info on what I would need for a stock blank for the end stock.

Thanks Erud, Gotcha and OIF. I'm thinking about doing a few more, seeing how this one came out. Keeps me out of trouble on the Sale boards.
