TEST. Best brass sorting method

Mulligan

Silver $$ Contributor
As winter sets in, I am preparing to perform a brass sorting test.

The following is what I am planning on doing to sort out the best method of sorting match quality brass.

Start with new brass ( I will likely use my Dasher for this test)
Full match prep (trim, chamfer, primer pockets, the works)
Number brass 1-60 (60 pieces of brass are needed for an F-class match)
Weight sort
Prime
Volume sort with ball powder
Load match quality ammo
Shoot at 600 yards-all at the same target——identifying the outliers
Record velocity of each round while fireforming.

Record all data by case number

Use the brass in local shoots and record offending brass (shots not where called) to see if there is a correlation with any of the sorting methods.

Suggestions or thoughts???

Thanks

Myself and lot of other BR shooters would fling a shot and then throw the offending brass out into the grass. Damn brass! Once we cooled off we would retrieve it then try to duplicate the errant shot. I never could. YMMV
When I load I arrange rounds in the ammo box by neck tension.

Do you sort your brass?
I agree, neck tension can be a really big deal.

Try ball powder with a fast pour a a slow pour and a drop tube
And you will find it not the bests thing

I start with good quality brass. Weight, within reason, is meaningless. Then I just look for the odd pieces during neck turning and loading. The rest is pretty much a mind game.

I agree. This past year I kept track with my dasher. I made it to shoot offs with 1 time fired brass and shot well with old brass. I never weighed a case. From my notes other things made a much bigger difference.
