Well, let me just say that it was a wonderful match, there were a total of 52 competitors that shot, lots of awards were given out and great fellowship this past weekend. Those that could not come missed a great match. On sat, the weather was great, mirage was very previlent, I dropped too many points on the first stage. The rifle was clean, the morning was very cool and the nut behind the buttplate couldn't get settled. It took about 15 shots before everything started to come together. Ended up with a 194-5X, at 500 yards this nut started to settle down and so did the rifle, got caught twice by the wind and yaked one shot out for a 197-9X. Then we moved on to 600 yards. Conditions were switching winds and one shouldn't shoot in a boil, I got caught 3 times again with the wind switching, each time after the shot looking into the spotting scope the wind was in a boil, to which I knew that I was out again. Ended up with a 197-7X. Then it was off to the great food afterwords and it was good too. There was enough for everyone to have two or three apiece.
On sunday, the weather had changed, with the threat of rain, which thankfully it held off till the 600 yard stage and we were able to shoot from under the cover at the 600 yard line (the firing point is actually just in front of it), the prone shooters shot from between the benches and the f-class shooters shot in the open area, but all of it was under a wonderful cover that kept us all nice and dry. On sat after the match, I stated that I was not going to clean my rifle and I stayed on that game plan, oh by the way, I was shooting my .223 with 75gr AMaxes with 24grs of H4895 and Lapua brass, the rifle is a Remington action in a Eliseo stock. So sunday morning, it is a lil warmer and it was cloudy. At 300 yards there was no mirage to see. The flags were worthless too, wet with dew, they didn't move at all. I was on relay 1 and my plan was to chase the spotter, well it wasn't really needed, ended up with a 200-15X on the first stage. We then moved to the 500 yard line, there I was able to see a lil mirage, even though it was cloudy. Moisture was beginning to fall, but nothing serious yet. I yaked a 9 at 8 o'clock (got to stop doing that) and finished with a 199-11X, so then on to the 600 yard stage and the rain, which helped by the way, for it made the mirage appearent and it was nice to have the cover to keep us dry. It was loud under it and sometimes hard to get the line boss (Master Po) to hear a call for a mark, but in the end it all worked out. Through the spotting scope one could see that the rain was comming streight down, but with the mirage, you could see movement in the wind. Finished with a 200-13X. All in all again it was a great weekend. I hope others will tell their experiences from this weekend. I know I want to read them, I didn't get a chance to talk to everyone, but several friends and new friends I did get the chance too. It was good to see Bill Hocker, Phillip Crowe, Frank Beckman, Randy, Howard. To have met David Mayfield and his buddy Bob. It was great to meet Jim Fowler the barrel tossing champion, my friend Troy and his daughter Mischelle (by the way she won high woman and high jr. f-class), whom were very thankful for a great weekend and his bosses for allowing him to take his daughter to this match.
There were awards for out of state winners in overall and catagory and for the state residents. Again, a very rewarding weekend for everyone and I will be looking forward to the next time I come down to Memphis to shoot at the Memphis Shooting Sports Association. They have a great club and a great range and those that are memebers should be very proud of what they have there.
