Tennessee Mid Range State Championship

Just a reminder that if you have nothing to do and would like to shoot, the match is this weekend at the Memphis Shooting Sports Association.

Well, let me just say that it was a wonderful match, there were a total of 52 competitors that shot, lots of awards were given out and great fellowship this past weekend. Those that could not come missed a great match. On sat, the weather was great, mirage was very previlent, I dropped too many points on the first stage. The rifle was clean, the morning was very cool and the nut behind the buttplate couldn't get settled. It took about 15 shots before everything started to come together. Ended up with a 194-5X, at 500 yards this nut started to settle down and so did the rifle, got caught twice by the wind and yaked one shot out for a 197-9X. Then we moved on to 600 yards. Conditions were switching winds and one shouldn't shoot in a boil, I got caught 3 times again with the wind switching, each time after the shot looking into the spotting scope the wind was in a boil, to which I knew that I was out again. Ended up with a 197-7X. Then it was off to the great food afterwords and it was good too. There was enough for everyone to have two or three apiece.

On sunday, the weather had changed, with the threat of rain, which thankfully it held off till the 600 yard stage and we were able to shoot from under the cover at the 600 yard line (the firing point is actually just in front of it), the prone shooters shot from between the benches and the f-class shooters shot in the open area, but all of it was under a wonderful cover that kept us all nice and dry. On sat after the match, I stated that I was not going to clean my rifle and I stayed on that game plan, oh by the way, I was shooting my .223 with 75gr AMaxes with 24grs of H4895 and Lapua brass, the rifle is a Remington action in a Eliseo stock. So sunday morning, it is a lil warmer and it was cloudy. At 300 yards there was no mirage to see. The flags were worthless too, wet with dew, they didn't move at all. I was on relay 1 and my plan was to chase the spotter, well it wasn't really needed, ended up with a 200-15X on the first stage. We then moved to the 500 yard line, there I was able to see a lil mirage, even though it was cloudy. Moisture was beginning to fall, but nothing serious yet. I yaked a 9 at 8 o'clock (got to stop doing that) and finished with a 199-11X, so then on to the 600 yard stage and the rain, which helped by the way, for it made the mirage appearent and it was nice to have the cover to keep us dry. It was loud under it and sometimes hard to get the line boss (Master Po) to hear a call for a mark, but in the end it all worked out. Through the spotting scope one could see that the rain was comming streight down, but with the mirage, you could see movement in the wind. Finished with a 200-13X. All in all again it was a great weekend. I hope others will tell their experiences from this weekend. I know I want to read them, I didn't get a chance to talk to everyone, but several friends and new friends I did get the chance too. It was good to see Bill Hocker, Phillip Crowe, Frank Beckman, Randy, Howard. To have met David Mayfield and his buddy Bob. It was great to meet Jim Fowler the barrel tossing champion, my friend Troy and his daughter Mischelle (by the way she won high woman and high jr. f-class), whom were very thankful for a great weekend and his bosses for allowing him to take his daughter to this match.

There were awards for out of state winners in overall and catagory and for the state residents. Again, a very rewarding weekend for everyone and I will be looking forward to the next time I come down to Memphis to shoot at the Memphis Shooting Sports Association. They have a great club and a great range and those that are memebers should be very proud of what they have there.

I agree with Froggy, it was a great weekend to shoot. Lots of good shooting, lots of lies... oh I am sorry good stories. Lol meeting old friends and making new ones made the match a success. Doug and crew put on a great match whether you were from out of town or TN.

The biggest mistake I made was trying something new instead of going with what I had. It cost me 21 points on 300 Sunday. Grrrrrr! Overall, I shot fair and can live with it.

Thanks MSSA for another great match.

It was a great weekend for Michele and myself(TEAM CROSSFIRE LOL). I feel we both learned something this weekend. The mirage Saturday was a learning experience for both of us. Michele did all her scope work herself this weekend getting zeroed. O and i think she will look at the target number every time now, that takes a 198 down to a 188 in a hurry. We got to talk with some shooters we had met before and several that were new to us, and all have been so helpful to a couple of new shooters like us. It was a great crowd and a very nice facility, we will most definitely be back. One thing i have noticed being new to this sport is we need more junior and women shooters as juniors are the future of the sport. We look forward to a long friendship with the ones we have met, and yes you to Randy, you have been very patient and helpful to my whole family and i am thankful to you my friend. Troy and Michele

Troy,

That's because that 6 mm he was shooting shot lights out! If it had shot one iota less than he expected I would not have been surprised if one of those trains ran it over.

Jim is a good guy and a top class competitor. That he can take the ribbing by backing it up with his shooting makes him a good guy to be around.

Troy I heard from my friend and I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

thank you Allen, it is very hard to lose her but she is no longer in pain and she is with my dad now. thanks to all for being such good people to know. Troy

Thanks for the kind words guys..... The 'incident" was not one of my best moments, but we learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat them...even though they can be funny as hell watching ;D I do expect my equipment to work, and it worked well this weekend. I loving shooting, but the friendships that we all share while doing so is what makes it all worth while to me. It was a great weekend..would have been even if I'd finished at the bottom...

Troy...sorry for you and your family loss...my thought and prayers are with you'll through these hard times...

Jim

I'll have to second all the positivity about this weekend's match. Attaboy to Indicative Doug (Now Smug Doug according to "Dad") for putting on a great match. The best part was getting to meet people like Jim Murphy and Danny Biggs. I look forward to shooting with them again soon. It was a blast.

This will be my third year attending and it gets better every year. Weather was very nice, all the competitors were great to shoot with/against on both days. Doug did a great job as match director!
I met a lot of new folks and saw some of the familiar faces - great times and memories. Lots of big name competitors, however, you would not know it - all great to be around for a couple of days.
I was watching Jim Fowler shooting one of his relays through my spotting scope, he was a machine. Many high scores and I'm sure records as well.
Good times & highly recommend attending next year.
That BBQ dinner was lip smakin good an added bonus.

Great to meet and shoot with all of ya!

Wow
Jim what combo where you shooting to only drop one point in two days of shooting? that is awsome shooting.
Ill see if I can get the results from Doug tomrw and post them.

Great shooting.

Thanks Russ! We missed you there, but it looked liked your were have fun in the land down under. Shooting a new Dasher by S&S Precision(stick..aka..Don Stark), running the new Berger 105 Hybrids...boy do those things shoot!!

Chris was hot on my heels all weekend! He only dropped three points, one of which was probably my fault due to the fact that he shot the spotter, I couldn't see the hole to mark it, leading to a 2 or so minute delay between shots... His next shot drifted out right just a little due to the changed winds...then I believe that I tied a record at 500 yards, only to have Chris shatter it with a 200/18x the next relay. Ken and Matt both shot very well too!! It was a great weekend with good friends!

Maybe next year I can bring a couple of shot out barrels so ther can be a barrel toss match.
Howard

In the International Barrel Tossing rule book, under rule 4.3 it is stated that only one barrel is allowed in competition, and you have to shoot the entire match with such barrel preceding the barrel tossing competition! Is that correct Fowler? ;D
