Temperature

What effect does the temperature have on accuracy?

Say a 30 degree day compared to a 70 degree day?

It just seems as though we shoot better on a warm day.

thanks Link

I have noticed that temp. makes a difference in accuracy as well as high humidity. Don't matter which rifle I take in the woods, if it is wet and kind of on the cool side together, my groups always open up. I got to the point I just don't even shoot if it is really wet and cool unless I am just blowing out brass. I guess I might be shivering too bad like Catshooter said. Bill

Temperature affects the internal reaction of the powder/primer ignition and burn. When this changes the barrel harmonics change and a good load can turn sour or a not-so-good load can turn into THE load.

If you have a chronograph, shoot in the different temperatures and note the muzzle velocities. Run the numbers through your ballistic software and you will see how your gun/amunition is affected velocity wise by temperature changes. REMEMBER THAT INTERNAL BALLISTICS ARE BASED UPON AMMUNITION TEMERATURE, NOT AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE, SO DO NOT LET THE AMMO WARM BY PUTTING A CARTRIDGE IN A WARM CHAMBER AND LET IT SIT. At the same time record you target results and note how accuracy is affected.

A "older" shooter one time told me to adjust powder charges in the winter to duplicate summertime velocity and the accuracy should be pretty much the same.

Some powders are advertised as less affected by temperature changes. One of these is VARGET.

And I agree, cold shooters shivering are usually more affected by weather than ammo/guns.

Yesterday was dead calm with a slight breeze, and sunny.
But it was 28 degrees out. BBrrrr A beautiful day.

I reloaded some amo for my 6br but opted not to go to the range.
I just didn't want to be disappointed in my efforts.
To say nothing about burning up components and putting more mileage on my Lapua brass.
