Tell me why

I have been comparing the straight W-W 284 against the 284 Shehane. What I can't seem to understand is why you would pay more money for special dies, possibly have to buy your own reamer unless your lucky enough to have a friend or know someone willing to loan/rent you his all for a VERY modest increase of 3.35 gr. more capacity. Having never shot either variation of the cartridge, am I missing something?

The Shehane straightens the taper in the case wall. This increases the grip by the wall and relives pressure on the rebated head that is 308 size. In theory increasing life of the weaker component.

Cost is the same. Whidden dies cost the same money for .284 Win as them do for the .284 Shehane.

Bingo..... Had Widden Dies been out when I first started reloading for every discipline of target shooting I do, they'd all be Widden. Someday they will be. ;)

+150-200 fps

I'm a little doubtful of that. I've been shooting a straight 284 for a year. The guys with equal barrels lengths (32") and 284 Shehanes are getting about 50 fps more at the tune. To be honest, one of my friends running a Shehane at 30" is getting less velocity than I am by about 20-30 fps when it tunes.

I might have a fast barrel in my straight 284. With HBN and H4831SC (seemed to be a very slow lot), I was able to get 2975 with good case life. That said, she wouldn't tune. I ended up switching to H4350, and haven't looked back. I'm running a very mild 2820 with enough headroom to put another 70 fps on it if needed.

Note: all of my numbers are with 180 hybrids...

75-100 is pretty common. The .284 Win tunes around 2820-2850 where the .284 Shehanes usually tune around 2,920. There are exceptions of course.

My experience is with 28" barrels. After two years of trying, I decided to stay with 6 Dashers. Maybe I should have shot them slower.

Look at the 7 Walker (284AI basically) as well. 32" Bartlein is giving me 2940 with H4350, tunes very easy, and brass life is very good so far. I built it so I could shoot in the mid 2800's and be very easy on brass, but it shoots so well at 2940, why not use the extra 100fps. There is another node that I can reach at 2990, but brass starts paying the price there...I'm with the only guys here, go straight to H4350.

I see no benefit too the shehane. I am a .284 guy and with the right powder combo 2950 isn't that hard to get running a 30" pipe. I do wanna play with a 7 walker though Just as it is interesting, but for me I like the .284 and if you want more power I would jump to the 7SAUM.

I thought about building one myself, but when I checked water capacity between the .284 AI and the Shehane, there was .3 gr. difference between the two. I built the Shehane because I have had good luck with it in the past, but either will do what you need it to do.

If you run the .284 Improves cartridges at .284 Win velocities, brass life will be greatly extended.

I run both the .284 win and the .284 Shehane , The shehane runs great at 2820 fps with 4350, the straight 284 runs great at 2860 with 7828. I can run the shehane close to 3000fps with 7828 with good accuracy but its not as consistent as the slower load and its easy on brass where as the 284 is pretty much topped out at that speed.
