Tasco Scope coating

dokey

I just acquired a couple of Tasco scopes made in China. They are new but are coated with a black sticky coating that rubs off in your hand when you grab them. My question is what solvent would be best for removing the coating. So far I've tried mineral spirits, Brake cleaner and Acetone. Acetone works but it evaporates so quickly that it leaves a hardened film that has to be scraped with a razor. Anybody got any ideas?

WD40 works great as a cleaner/solvent on some things,as far as finishes go it is quite safe...but you never know.

Ditch them and get a scope that's not made in China.
I figured that was what you were going to say and I know what folks say about stuff made in China. These 2 scopes are of very high quality with crystal clear optics at every focal distance. Anyway thanks for your input

Once the coating is removed the scope's finish is black anodized

Airgun forum i believe BSA rubber deteriorated coating were removed by wd40 and a good rubdown spoken of by several posters.
Never done it myself so try a spot first.
My gift BSA hasnt gone gooey yet

I think I should make a clarification, the coating on the scopes are NOT finishes , but some kind of protection coating like cosmoline. The only thing that works so far is Acetone but because it evaporates so quickly you have to work very quickly. WD40 is useless, as is brake cleaner

Maybe a long shot, but how about Goo Gone? Seems to work on a wide range of things including adhesives. Just a thought.

Acetone is a ketone solvent and it works, so I would try some MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) as it is slower evaporating than acetone.

I have a rubber coated Bushnell Rangefinder that became a little "sticky" over time. I happened to have some lacquer thinner that I carefully applied to a rag that safely removed the rubberized coating without affecting the finish underneath. (I did a small sample area before I did the entire thing and just to be safe)

It's not a lens coating, it's something on the scope tube. Try alcohol.

Did you think he was describing a lens coating?

I stand by my opinion. If they put a gooey coating on the scope tube, the product is junk. There is obviously no quality control, probably mystery metal and a general lack of respect for their customers.

I have a GoSky scope that I left in a closet over the summer. The heat must be the cause of the sticky mess that I found in the fall. I tried various soaps, alcohol, toilet cleaner, Windex, etc., none of which worked. Then I tried a lacquer thinner, nitrocellulose. To my horror, it starting taking off the scope's green paint. I kept going with it, removed all of the paint, and then buffed it with steel wool (a dry SOS pad). Now I have a beautiful looking black telescope which I plan to use to watch the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter on Dec. 21 (2020).

I agree with Dud's proposal, but it has nothing to do with it being made in China; I agree just because it's a Tasco product. We had a very bad experience with them once - mounted a brand new Tasco (took it out of the box and installed it) and when I went to adjust the elevation, sighting the rifle in at the range, the entire elevation assembly came off the barrel of the scope. Their warranty service was non-existent - they refused to honor the lifetime warranty, and their offer of a replacement scope at a discount price was a joke; I worked part time for a dealer at that time, and he could get it for me at his cost plus postage and sales tax, which was less than the discount price they offered. Buy Tasco and take your chances, as you are finding out. Good Luck.
