Target rifle sights (for prone sling shooting)

Hello Gentlemen

I'm looking for a top mount sight for my tube gun so I can shoot in some prone sling matches, we only shoot to 900 yards locally. I don't want to spend a lot of money for an occasional use, I've seen the Phoenix but its kinda pricey - are there other options I should be looking at??

Thanks
Foster

There are a number of rear sights on the market; Centra, PNW, Phoenix and Warner. The Centra is imported and is not inexpensive. The PNW is probably the least expensive while the Warner is the most and considered the reference by which all others are judged. I have had all but the Centra. You can usually find one of the three domestic sights offered used for a decent price if you watch the forums. The Warner will cost more but it will also retain its value if you take care of one and then decide to sell after you have used it for awhile. Right Sights are popular for the front but the Riles is a very well made alternative, www.rilesmachine.com. Again, watch the forums and you can usually find used front sight assemblies that have been well cared for and cost quite a bit less than buying new. Product support for all the domestic sights I have has been good in my experience.

champions choice has adapters that bolt to a pic rail that take Redfield type mounted sights,,I have a PNW on mine but also have a Redfield Palma on a smallbore that seems to work just as good,,,,I used the Mo`s front sight tower with 22mm Centra 4-6mm iris and .5 diopter,,banging 20 inch steel at 1,000 just for fun is not that hard and have actually hit a 10 inch plate a few times,,rifle is a 6.5x47

sights are mounted so high to work with the AICS 1.5,,

You grt what ya pay for

this is true no doubt,,I like the PNW for my use but the Centra and Warner may be better IDK,,but with the Mo`s front it adjusts 5MOA per notch for getting close and the PNW rear has 1/4 MOA clix and 3 MOA per turn and it tracks better than a lot of scopes with no backlash or dead clix,,

when zeroed at 100 yards my front is on line 14 and to move to 1,000 I go to line 9 for 25 MOA and then only need 8-9 clix on the rear to get on at 1,000,,the Gehmann iris allows for focusing to the light conditions with pretty much none loss of zero,,

I have thought about a .75 or 1.0 diopter for the 10 inch plate at 1,000,,I cant do it without anything and can just barely see it with the .5 but I can and with the front closed up to 4mm I have hit it 5 times in a row,,

but I just do this for fun on days when some of my buddys are having trouble makin contact with their 5.5-22 NF scopes,,

it is maybe my funnest rifle to shoot,,

Thanks for the help guys, I have contacted CSS to see if they still offer an adapter.

I like your style Mr Big, a lady shooter here from the small club where I shoot(actually one of the top sling shooters in NZ, she will represent us internationally soon) recently was invited to a long range challenge style match with steel targets to 1100 metres ( see http://www.nzmountainchallenge.com ). To everyone's surprise (except mine and her coach) she won best lady shooter, and place Fifth overall, an outstanding effort with a sling rifle and iron sights.

when I first set rifle up for sights I had a 3 inch wide plate bolted in the rail for the handstop and was shooting it off a rest to get my dope and check to see if everything tracked as it should,,I can tell you for sure the Mo`s front sight adjusts as good as the PNW rear and is much easier to get 25 of the MOA I need by moving it down 5 notches than it would be to twist the knob on the PNW almost 9 full turns,,
Tim Claunch did all the work on this rifle also and turned the mzl down to .750 to use the Mo`s front sight,,barrel is a Bartlien 8 twist 5R on a Rem700 PSS action with bolt bushed and pin turned down by Greg Tannell,,

the sights are repeatable enough I can take them off and mount a scope and put them back on and be within an inch of my zero at 100 yards and most times it will be dead on,,

a clip of the first 5 shots I tried at the 15 inch 1000 yard steel plate,,4 out of 5 aint too bad.

click the pic to play video,,camera sux but you can get an idea,,

I have a Phoenix rear and Right sight on the front. I've seen Warner's the only difference I see over my Phoenix is the name which causes the higher cost.

Nice setup, Mr Big!

Some good recommendations on here. What is the difference between a Warner rear sight and a less expensive model - PNW for example? Is it just the smoothness or is it more repeatable? Makes me think of what Zediker says about the rear A2 sight. A lot of people want it pinned in place, but it's already held by spring tension so there will be no real difference in performance by pinning it. Just wondering if it's a question of aesthetics, or if there's a noticeable difference in repeatability for the different brands of rear sights.

Literally the name IMHO. Since the Warner is the required sight for the Palma team well then the price can be higher. It's like in chambering a barrel just because a guy charges more doesn't mean he does a better job than a guy who charges less. Just that person is able to charge more. In a PNW I think there is a plastic bushing or something that can be stripped out and are stupid and keep turning it after its maxed out, but other than that nothing. My brother uses a PNW on his course rifle and he's never had any rissues.

I run Phoenix rear and Right sight front on both my 6BR and my Palma rifle. It's a great setup and I like that you can read the Phoenix sight from behind while you're on the gun. The Warner is a great sight and I would put the Phoenix in the same league. I've only handled one PNW and it seemed well built but some folks don't care for them. I would avoid an old Redfield if you want to be serious. They tend to have a lot of play and aren't as repeatable as the newer sights. Good luck and thank you for being part of the sling shooter community.

I've had no issues with my Phoenix sights. I Think at one time when they first came out their was only one set screw in the wind and ele knobs that work/could work loose causing problems. Mine has 2 set screws and their 10 years old.

Phoenix, good!
PNW, later sights do not have the set-screw that anchors the plastic bushing that the elevation adjustment runs in. I've had that slip on me on 2 different units. The hole for the set-screw is there, just no screw or threads to complete it. Relegated strictly to smallbore now and I did have the set-screw added to 1 of the sights after problems.

Fact that Warner is no longer making sights (for now) will send many shooters to Phoenix to purchase. My Warner sights were purchased used for a very fair price. I don't think I would have bought them new. My Phoenix sights are on my 6xc that I shot at 1000, 3 weeks ago in a regional and they did/do very fine, meaning track great, work properly.
