Target Cartridges for a Magnum Bolt???

I have access to a very low mileage Remington 700 action with a magnum bolt. What cartridges fit this bolt? I only shoot paper at close range so a magnum caliber is not necessary.

Thanks,

Cort

Magnum bolt, magnum cartridge. PTG makes an after market bolt, but feeding could be an issue unless you use detachable mags, and with the way things are going, you might have a bugger of a time finding any.

You can load down any cartridge. Try a Short Mag of choice (Remington Short Mag has slightly less powder capacity). The older .264 belted short mag might be interesting. I believe it has the least capacity of any magnum. Use powder that is slower than recommended for that cartridge and use enough to fill the case (as opposed simply using less of a recommended powder and having too much air in the case). You will end up with a slower version of that cartridge that would be more pleasant and accurate to shoot. Used to do just that with the 7mm Rem. Mag.. Used REloader 25 instead of the traditional Reloader 22. Today I might use Reloader 33 instead.
Have fun!

If you don't mind lots of brass work why not do something along the lines of a WSSM such as a 30WSSM (think 30br) or 7mmWSM. The brass needs neck-turned to be very consistent and sorted but it could be fun and when care is taken these cartridges can be VERY accurate, maybe NOMAD will give his to cents as I'm pretty sure I read on here that he has/does own at least one 6mm WSSM.

If you look at it in pure economics, sell it. Buy what you need. The WSSMs are not good accuracy cartridges.
Before anybody jumps on this, What have they won?

I think the 6.5 WSSMs have done well at Williamsport.

And I can say that a 243 wssm chambered in a 30" Krieger barrel is accurate enough to kill groundhogs at over 1000 yards distance.

Did you read the OP's original post?

Yes, I did!! Did you??

Couldn't agree more Nomad, those cartridges get a lot of grief from folks for NO reason. seeing as though he likes short range stuff I think a 30WSSM would be great as it would give better barrel life and be great for hunting just about anything if he desires to take it out and hunt. Heck for that matter do something way off the wall and go 338WSSM and you'd have a barrel that last forever (relatively speaking) and a nice short powder column that generally leads to accuracy. Or if you want a little more muzzle energy and easier to find/better brass go with a WSM necked up to say 35cal. I even saw a cartridge at my local shop today that I hadn't heard or read much about. It was a 500 whisper (338Lapua Mag knecked up to 50cal). I dare someone to tell me that wouldn't be cool to launch 800 grains subsonic which a can.

Thanks, WVU. The Indiana deer hunters have taken the WSSM case one step further and made a 357 WSSM which is legal for deer in Indiana.

Yes, the WSSMs have gotten a bad rap because of a flaw in Winchester's design - the thick necks. If a GOOD gunsmith would order a 243 wssm reamer that required neck turning, he could make a VERY accurate cartridge.

I appreciate all the comments. I think I am going to pass on this action. Short range paper doesn't need the recoil of a boomer and I still am playing with a 6 BR and a .223 so I have plenty to keep me busy.

nomad and whiskey,
If you will read his original post he said he was shooting short range, did he not?

And he never said the words "compete" or "competition". Think about it. If he was competing at short range, he wouldn't even be asking about a magnum boltface, now would he?

And my first post in this thread was a response to your antagonistic post. Wvuredneck09 asked for my two cents on the WSSMs - he didn't ask for you to rag on them.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am with mine. My experience with the 243 and 223WSSMs show me a couple POS cartridges. Yes, you can do several things to help them shoot and not be so hard on brass.
He said he didn't need a magnum for shooting paper at short range.
I'm glad you and ruffnek like the wssms, I don't.

I like anything that goes boom. Someone takes stuff way to personal though, if we never tried new cartridges we wouldn't have half of the "competition" cartridges we have today. I'm sure many thought there was no need and had trouble at first wrapping their heads around the 6ppc (which is hard to load for as well compared to say a 308WIN) but a few gave it a shot. For what it is worth I don't own/load for any of the WSSM's but have shot them and find them interesting. Plan to build a WSSM AR one of these days.

I made and sold wildcat case forming dies for years. The reason that I did that was because of the challenge of finding something better. It will be very hard for a person to find something better than what we have now. Until somebody has been around awhile and until he gets a knowledgeable buddy, he needs to stay with a standard cartridge.
My first semi accurate rifle was a 6BR. Without a Buddy or acquaintance to turn to, it took a long long time to get to it's potential. Remember the days before cell phones and the internet. It did shoot well enough to capture me.
wvuredneck, you're still looking over my Grandson ,Josh, at WVU? He is enjoying being a Mountaineer.

I had actually forgotten that you told me he was up here. I'm still in the area although I graduated awhile back. It is a great town for sure.
