Target camera ideas

Hello

I was looking online at some wireless cameras that work with a smartphone. Was originally looking for another purpose, but it got me thinking they might work for a target cam

The real issue I see is range, for me, I'd want to use them past 300yards, up to 600-700 or so. The issue being the range is not advertised on the ones I was looking at.

Anyone cobble together one of their own? I would use it pretty intermittingly so a commercial unit does not make sense for me. Just wondering if folks are using something else?

Just to clarify, I have see the target cameras on this forum. Really neat idea with the video camera, screen, etc.

Was more interested in something compact, easy to use and set up. I have the note 3 so the screen is huge (relatively) so being able to have something in the small package, utilizing my phone is what I'm after.

Still like to hear any feedback,,,,the cameras I'm talking about are 50 bucks or so, so may just pick one up and see how far I can take it to

You will not be happy with the utility (resolution, pan, zoom, etc...) of a $50 camera. My guess is that it will be almost useless as a target cam, no matter the range. Guaranteed.

The closest thing I can think of that might be doable would be a DropCam, which is $149. It features zoom (digital though), no pan/tilt. Might work, might not. Tough to say if you can get it close enough for the image to have enough resolution to be useful.

Here's a couple of ideas. I used a similar setup for recording motocross races before the Hero cameras came out. Worked well out to almost a mile unless there were high power lines around. The resolution really depends on the camera used and the distance from the camera to the target.

Thanks for the links. Very doable too, just not what I hoped for. But that looks like the reality. Don't know how I missed the similar post down a couple posts! Thanks

If you are doing this in the US you should get the 2.4 GHz version as that is an unlicensed band, but I am not sure at a power of 2 W.

Check out "Bullseye Target Cam" system. All you need in one package including software that flashes your last shot in the group and a bunch of other features. By the time you buy the components to build your own, you'll pay as much, if not more, than the Bullseye system costs.
Check out the other post about target cameras in this forum. A rep from Bullseye responds to some questions about their system and some complaints as well.

Not necessarily the case, but doing so requires some technical experience so that might be a barrier in some cases.

Thanks for the link.

The software is a big plus, but not critical. It would appear that without the software, you would not be able to utilize and Ipad, etc? Also wondering how it interfaces (plugs in) to the ipad
