talladega cmp range

so i took my new f-open 6mm dasher over to this range this weekend. very nice layout.

one odd thing though, i only shot 600 yards. so they raise the target and the guy shows me the different views i can get on the screen, including standard f type targets. i go to look through my scope and there is simply a large black circle with no center etc. 36 inches in diameter.

i have never shot like this before. instead of aiming at the center you sort of have to figure where the center would be and wing it from there.

other than that was a very nice place.

anyone else been there?

eta they use kongsberg targeting systems

Boy I wish someone would build a range like that in new York state like near Rochester but alas we live in a state governed by idiots. Shooting is dying in new York so count your blessings. Maybe if we get a decent president and vote a new governor in who doesn't hate target shooters , maybe the state could cough up a few million that they give away to NY START_UP which is a total waste of money to build us a shooting preserve etc to make it safe . Then we could pick a nice spot in the finger lakes to put it in. Sorry for the rant but would love to see our state step up to the plate.

Sounds looks like real nice range. I asked someone before but no reply, was it very busy there and did it take long to get on a firing point?

I've been there a couple of times. Very nice facility but at the end of the day, it is an across the course shooting range. At 200, 300 or 600 all you have is the "black dot" that represents the size of the black on XTC targets (36" at 600 yds). NO center pinpoint spot for optical shooters at all. I wonder if that will change now that they allow optics up to 4.5 (I think) power on AR-15 service rifles? Time will tell, but in the meantime, it is a CMP open sight shooting facility and not really F-class friendly. (as far as the targets go)

This is exactly why I do not use fine crosshairs or a target dot. All my 12-42 NFs have some sort of reticle with hash marks vice mildots. Easy to bracket whatever size bull and very easy to just hold off for wind rather than spin the knobs. Some days the reticle illumination helps a lot too.

scope on my rifle is a march 5-40 mil-mil so it has all the hash marks. but still finding a 3-6 inch center by placing your hash marks astride the big black circle and compensating for the wind at the same time produced mixed results. there was a gusting wind blowing left to right from 4 to 10 mph while i was there. i had good results on some strings and not so good on others using your described technique. if i had had simple cross-hairs i think i would have done one or two strings and called it a day. i am used to aiming for small center and holding off and/or making adjustments in my scope settings but that was the first i ever had to locate the center by putting my hash marks (all 4) relative to the perimeter of the circle.

Its obvious that the set up at this range is very efficient in some ways. after all, the guy in his booth, clicks on a particular target and it comes up out of the ground. you could start at 200 and very easily move to 300 and 600 simply by having the guy click on a screen in the control area. no 'range is cold' while targets are pulled or changed (well there was one because a match going on down the line had a challenge to a called shot and the apparently they have cardboard backing that is pulled to verify shots in such a condition).

what i'd like to know is do systems like this (electronic) support all of the various targets and if so how without going down range and replacing a cover or something.

i've been up there about 10-12 times so far i use my hash marks or mil-dots depending on what rifle i'm using it is challenging with the wind. i have gotten to where i set up with what the wind is mainly doing then wait till the conditions change back to what i'm set up for. they are trying to get f class started up there but they have ran into a few problems one is no rings to hold off on (nra rules state a paper target with ring to be used also and cost they are having another match may 7th cost is 50.00 which some of us feel is alittle stiff for just a regular match that is not a nra sanctioned match. on the test match they used center of bullet to measure where your bullet hit which means if you just broke the 10 ring it is a 9.9 not a 10 by there scoring i ended up with a 595.7 for a score it doesnt matter if you shoot a 223 or a 308 it only counted center of the bullet .

what happens if a round didnt register? a few of us from memphis are coming over May 7th but we were told that there will be F-class targets instead of just the black dot, any info in that??

please report back what its like. the display can show any type of target. basically an overlay i assume. but at the target itself is a big black circle. I would assume that some sort of overlay could be placed on the circle. but it would be absolutely critical that the target overlay match the screen overlay. so if they do have some sort of system for doing that i would be very interested in hearing it. the folks there were really nice and i got a lot of explanation of how things worked and also some of the folks looked through my scope to see what i was talking about and didnt mention any way of addressing the issue. i suggested putting a small 1 MOA circle in the center. once again though the circle would have to be absolutely in line with the electronics, otherwise you could loose simply by hitting the perimeter of the circle but the circle being off by a 1/4 inch or less.

as to round didnt register, they actually had that happen (or it was a contested shot placement). they called the range cold and went out to retrieve a cardboard backing that i was told was used to address such challenges. this was a non-optics competition going on a one part of the range.
