Talk to me about 1911s - which brand/model?

I dont own a 1911...

Id like to get one to shoot for fun... however I'm trained/battle hardened to glock... so a glock is on me 12-14 hours a day most days. Which is fine, im a glock guy, always was.

What brand is the go to for 1911s? There's tons of brands... I know some have better tolerances, better machined, better triggers...

I've heard the more they break in the better...

Whats yalls opinions on brands? I dont know much about 1911's to rank anything...

My EDC is a Kimber CDP officers model. While I love my Glocks, deep down I'm a 1911 guy. Buy once, cry once.

Colt, Ruger, Kimber, I own all three and no issues with any of them, except for a Ruger commander in 9mm. The issue there was with the magazines which are supplied by Checkmate. I disassembled them and clipped a couple of coils off and they work now. The spring in their 9mm magazines, at least in mine, were so heavy that I couldn't get more than 4 or 5 rounds in them and I'm not exactly a weak guy! I have not tired any aftermarket replacements since the modification cured my issue. All the .45acp 1911's work. My most accurate out of the box is a Kimber Grand Raptor II. It took about 200 rds to get fully broke in but it will put groups on target that will equal or better the custom 1911's from the big name custom builders that cost 3-4 times as much. CMP has 1911's for sale and I hear they are decent.

of my best friends during my service time. I own two and one is
one of my daily carries......I had a third in 38 Super, which I never
should have sold, and my buddy won't sell it back.

Note......I prefer a flat mainspring housing, and not an arched.

Dan Wesson would be my choice for an over the counter 1911.

I shoot a vintage Colt Gold Cup 45 acp from rhe 1970s. The guns starting with 70N serial numbers are very accurate as they came from the factory. Great for Bullseye Pistol Competition.
Target loads only for these Colts.

Don’t forget Wilson Combat 1911s. And I’ve got a double-stack Para P14 Limited that’s great if you have big hands.

But if you’re just looking for a nice ‘fun to shoot’ range gun - I much prefer my CZ target sport orange. So so smooth and accurate.

I have had a Springfield Armory Trophy Match for years and it’s an awesome gun. This was their target model when I bought it. Their quality is top notch as is this guns accuracy.

My 1911 is an older Springfield that has a bunch of Ed Brown parts, it has a high round count and just gets better the more I shoot it. I also have a Dan Wesson Gaurdian which is a commander sized 1911 with the bobtail frame, excellent firearm. There’s a link below but they can be had for much less than retail, 1300-1450.00 if you look around a bit.

There’s so many 1911s to choose from that it can get to the point where everything starts looking the same. If you have a gun store with a range that will let you try a few out that would be a good place to start. I think Dan Wessons are good quality at a fair price but there’s many other options too. Some of the budget 1911s actually do a good job and you can trick them out along the way if want too.

If budget isn’t a big deal then Gucci 1911s like Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Les Bauer are expensive but very well done. Your gonna pay for any for those but if your willing to be patient and watched the used market you can find them with low round counts and you’ll pay 20% less which is still expensive. The triggers on some of these guns are spectacular.

I’ve started going to the 2011s. Staccatos are some of my favorite 2011s but there’s quite a few brands to choose from in that format too. As much as I love my 1911s I do enjoy the mag capacity of the 2011s. To each their own.

Not really a 1911 Guru, but I am an enthusiast, and lean towards Ruger.

My 45 ACP plinking pistol is a regular 5" SR1911 that I had the slide cut for a red dot.

I also have another 45 Ruger SR1911 Commander topped with Tru-Glo sights.

My CCW gun is a 9mm Ruger LW Commander with Tru-Glo sights, which also has a 2nd barrel in 38 Super.

My fun gun in 9mm is a 5" Springfield Armory Prodigy.
