Take someone shooting

The current youngster generation gets sucked into video games and social media all too often. If you want them to change give them the opportunity to tag along, shooting, fishing, hiking, camping, whatever - give them the chance to experience the hobby we all love and cherish. Maybe only 1 or 2 catch the fever or the vision but you will have have done them a favor for life if it opens their eyes. I enjoy introducing new people, of all ages, to the outdoors. I’ve seen the good it can do.

Earlier this year I took on my nephew on a cow elk hunt,a tag provided by the hunt of a life time organization. He’s amassed 6 mil plus in medical bills in his 17 year life span. I thought I was doing him the favor, the hunt lasted all of 30 minutes when light broke. He made a great shot. Smiles and high fives all around after the shot. On the drive home I realized that hunt did me more good than him I think, it felt rewarding and good to be part of that. Its a win win when help others enjoy the outdoors.

Giving is it's own reward.

Just like Christmas. :)

One of the aspects of this sport that I enjoy the most is helping fellow shooters either prepare for a hunt or coach them on reloading.

I was fortunate to be taught by some very experienced and competent instructors (Army) especially pistol shooting and enjoy spreading the knowledge.

Like other areas in shooting, youth participation is diminishing. We are losing the future of the sport. I have always helped out with the 4H Youth Shooting Sports Program. More than glad to loan a rifle and gear to a young shooter. When I ran a CMP and NRA High Power program at our club I would always bring an extra rifle and ammo for a new shooter to use should the need arise. Got grandkids that are just a few years shy of shooting but I'll be ready to turn out 3 more rifleman.

I have several (4-5) compact rifles on Howa Mini actions and a LH Model 700 in 6 and 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, and 6.5 Creed on the 700 ready at all times w/ a box of 50 rounds. I typically lend 2 out every year to new hunters that have a hand me down 30-30 or slug gun w/ open sights and no experience shooting them. I tell their parent to take them out and shoot the rifle, as many as they need, save the brass please and have fun. Quite a few kids got their first deer w/ perfect shots this way. This is an effort to get kids started off with success rather than the emotional baggage of a missed or wounded deer because of poor equipment. Not a good way to start off IMO.

It’s pretty easy to talk hunting w/ friends and figure out when their kids are going hunting for their ‘first hunt’. I just ask what rifle they have their kid using and offer an ideal option.

One of my missions in life is to introduce new shooters to our
wonderful pastime ----youngsters and adults. This has cost me
a little money but I don't begrudge a penny of it.

I admit the some of my motivation is that the young will someday
be voters and will maybe understand and support our 2A.

I didn't initially realize this but shooting also allows these young folks to rub
elbows with real people and get a bit of relief from the freaks who want
to turn our country into a cesspool.

Shoot'em good.

I think it's gotta be said that a safe and responsible introduction is pretty important.

I'd bet that most of us have seen the high number of "Blastaholics" out there who seem to get their jollies with the noise, recoil, and dust -- but have little value for marksmanship and actual skill. Would you want your kid (or any kid) to get his or her introduction from him?

A lot of times, a youth's first experience with a firearm, will greatly influence the direction that his interest goes. These days, with about half of homes not even having a father present, a kid's first experience often comes from uncle Bubba, or (enter name of beer guzzling, bullet spraying, bone headed stereotype here). jd

I have done 2 free matches at my local range with 1 day practice prior. Donated all ammo and equipment and paid entry fees. These were auctioned off for a coworker who has cancer and part of fund raising for her.
Smiles on their faces are priceless.

I've taught FAS classes for the state of Minnesota since 1995. Every class I ask if anyone is interested in shooting different types of firearms other than the 22 rfs and 20 gauges we use for classes.
Usually I get a few (3 or 4) that take up the offer and we set up a date/time. Guns go from 22 rf pistols (Single Action/semi auto) to CF pistols and rifles.
What is neat is watching their faces when they start getting (GOOD) groups at 100-200 yds and ringing steel at 200 (range limit). One thing that's almost universal is they think the heavy varmint/target rifles kick more because they weigh more and then they find out otherwise.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and working with the students and parents as well.
