Tailstock Misalignment?

All the more reason a smooth vs a jagged edge on the bullet would make a difference. All of this stuff shows up at 1000 yards.
Certainly would be interesting as even at supersonic speeds it appears features on bullets have visible effects.

The theory behind Shilens ratchet rifling was that only the one edge would engage the bullet and thusly increase the BC, etc. Theory was sound I guess but in actuality it never caught on with the long range shooters. Smallbore shooters on the other hand seem to really like it. 5R which is remotely similar seems to be the "thing" for long range these days.

5r is working well with the 338 solids I shoot for ELR.
Is it better than a standard 4 or 6 groove?
I’d be interested in any testing but I suspect the difference is so small it may fall into the noise of other variables.

I don't think that anyone can confirm that one is better than the other. All seem to work well if the barrel is a quality barrel.

Someone has probably already pointed it out, but tailstock misalignment doesn't produce a misaligned throat; only an eccentric setup of the barrel does that. Tailstock misalignment will cause the reamer to cut oversize. WH
Just depends on how the reamer is being held. Rigid, yes. Floating, naa. My TS sits a tick high. I use a JGS floater, my chambers have never cut oversized.

All tailstocks should sit a bit high when the machine is cold. As the headstock warms up, alignment follows. I generally let my lathe run for a few minutes before I start reaming. Most floating holders I have seen still cut to center under load, but will tolerate minor misalignment. Still, offset the rear of the reamer, and you will cut above reamer size. You will not cut an eccentric throat. WH

When reaming my chamber I care not about tailstock alignment. I use a pusher.

I use a pusher as well, but only for the last quarter inch or so. Up 'til then, I support the reamer with the center, which I dial in before each job (or, at least, check it). If one pre-bores, on a taper, to allow the reamer to be well into the chamber, I reckon the center wouldn't be needed. I usually just bore straight and 10 thou under shoulder diameter. This gives me a straight start and I switch to the pusher once the reamer is well supported. I use the center for a throater, since the throater needs support at the rear. WH

What do you have in the tailstock as the "pusher" ? I'm sure I can make one, just need to have an idea of what it looks like.

That one is a MT adapter. On my manual machines I used a drill chuck arbor. Put a drill bit in the chuck and fed the arbor in.
