Tagged coyote?

No bounty in NC. Possibly brought in by fox hunters and escaped from their run? ( Common practice here which helped coyotes move East ) or migrated from a state that does tag? Help me out guys. Customer killed this big male today. NCWRC doesn't seem to know squat. If anyone recognizes the tag or anything let me know.

it will be interesting if we can find out, which is why I posted. I know these guys can travel a helluva long way so just very curious.
 
You would not expect the DNR to say they had anything to do with "The Migration " would you. I shot my first one here in Tennessee in 1977. When I first saw it I thought someone's German Shepard was roaming. I was on a mountain in the middle of nowhere. It didn't make it but it wasn't a GS either. I've heard of the fox hunters bringing them in a running them also. I wish TN would let us hunt them at night with thermal but I believe too many would kill more than coyotes.
 
Only thing I have ever seen was a radio collared coyote killed by one of the guys in our group. He got a $200 reward for turning it in.

Yeah don't open than can of worms like my state did. See the other thread I started here on poaching.
There are plenty of conspiracy theories about how coyotes came east. I've heard them all. Fox hunters I do know for a fact, brought them here to run them in pathetic fenced in acreage that coyotes just climbed, dug or busted out of. Saw my first one around 1991 cross a road and had your same reaction - weird dog.
The facts seem to be natural migration to fill a void of predators with a bit of help by stupid homo sapiens. Our eastern breed has dog and wolf mix and is larger it seems than what the western boys seem to shoot. Our average male is 40lbs running to 60 lbs. Some all black, some blondish.
On a different forum someone suggested a SC coyote as they had been tagged there. That would be 100 miles as the dog runs - nothing for a coyote.
 
Reb, first coyotes I remember in Iredell county, NC, was in the late 70's, in north eastern Iredell near the Davie county line. Pretty sure those were escapees from a "fox pen" in Davie county. Since then, they've pretty much spread out all over the area. Up until a few years ago, everytime a siren went off, they would start howling, sometimes you would hear 3 or 4 different bunches at one time. Now, I very seldom hear them, but they're still here. Seems like they have learned not to howl and draw attention?
In the last 3 years, I've trapped and or shot 11 off of my little 6 acre patch alone, and just heard last night that a farmer about 8 miles away has lost 2 calves in the last week to coyotes. Gonna try to trade out some coyote control work for deer hunting permission on his place..
 
I thought they put red tags in the males' ears. So we were told 10 years ago or so when a trapper friend of mine found one in his snare. All we were able to find out is that large cities with deep pockets do exhaustive studies and capture and either chip, collar or tag coyotes to "study" their habits. The city of Chicago has been doing this for some time. Google up Chicago Coyote studies and you'll have plenty of reading.

And I'd be willing to bet there's a relocation program too. WD
 
NCWRC PROBALY TAGGED IT AND NOW WANT CLAIM IT WOULD BE MY GUESS I STILL SAY THEY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE DURN THINGS

Pretty sure a few red wolves were "misplaced" during the reintroduction in the Smokies several years back. So many in fact that they moved the remainder to eastern N Carolina.
On YOUR dime of course.

Ya'll ever figure anything out on this? Buddy of mine killed a big female Saturday in Iredell county, after the deluge stopped, that he said was also ear tagged, this one a orange or faded red tag. I didn't see the coyote, and he didn't take any pics, so I'm not sure.
