Tackdrivers. What did you shoot and what shooting disciplines do you participate in?

@SSeal brought up a good topic of discussion in the TD5 thread asking what specific disciplines the attendees typically participate in.

This is a great question to get an idea of who is who. So if you attended TD5, what did you shoot and what type of matches do you normally compete in?

I shot 6BR, 90gr BT.
My game is 300y Varmint matches, with occasional 600y shoots thrown in.
This year the combo of [gun + shooter] did not work well.
For TD6, leaning toward a 6PPC. I wish the shooter could be changed, but that's harder.

I was running a 6BR, 12 twist Krieger, shooting 68 gr Avengers. I shoot local groundhog matches, modified UBR, and 400 yard deer matches.

I also run and shoot the PA 300 Yard Tack Driver Lite match at Anderson Creek in Rockton, Pa. This match is a lite version of the Tack Driver match run by Jim Cline. We shoot 6 targets instead of 10, shoot at 300 yards instead of 300 meters, and it’s 1 day instead of 2. I wanted the competitors to get the general experience of Jim’s match, but didn’t want to be a direct copy. If you want the full experience there’s only one way to get it, and that’s to head to Orangeburg, SC.

I shot a 30BR Long. It’s about 0.080” over most 30BR’s. This barrel has 5500 rounds on it.

This was my 2nd match in 6 yrs. I’ve shot short range local club group, NBRSA group, IBS score and UBR score. I’ll get into it for a few years and then find something else that I like doing more. Now I’ve come back to Benchrest because I’m retired. Age 58 and that was OLD when I first shot Benchrest in the late 90’s. I’ve won a few and lost a bunch!

THANKS to Jim Cline and ALL others who made this shoot happen. And CONGRATULATIONS to those who won something or got even remotely close.

I spent Friday morning zeroing my rifle and backup rifle because I knew I wasn’t going to change scope settings for conditions like I normally do for score. I was 10th after the first group target, dropped 2 on the first score target and was still 10th in group after the 2nd group target. And then the mirage whipped my butt! I can’t read the flags without having sighters to prove my flag reading skills or lack thereof . I can (OK…. usually) pick out switches, pickups and letoffs but without sighters have no idea on their “value”. And when I’m “running” and can see a BAD shot I know when to STOP or to adjust aim point to keep the shots going where I’d like. Without being able to see my single shots I was lost. So I tried to “run” a condition for groups and tried to “run” a condition on my sighter for score to hopefully get enough touching to see the impact location and then keep running the 5 score targets holding off as required. I ended up stopping during a group target and got lost and shot a 1.976. I apparently didn’t recognize a pickup between the sighter shots and score shots on a score target and got a 32. That’s a THIRTY-TWO! My sighter said hold 1 ring up and 2 rings left and that’s what I did. The target is posted below to give you an idea of Orangeburg’s lack of pity on a shooter.

So my flag reading skills SUCK. And there were some shooters who TOTALLY knew their game! I thought my strategy was sound. I honestly don’t think what caliber matters as long as your gun will group good at 300 meters. Remember I shot a TWO inch group and a THIRTY-TWO in score after being 10th in group after the 1st and 2nd group targets. And I still placed in the top quarter in group and the top half overall. To me it’s ALL about SKILL and not making BIG mistakes. Just like ALL shooting matches.

I shot my friends special built rifle for this match, Steve Jaynes since he passed on and couldn't do it.
It is a slow twist 6br shooting 69 gr bt hillbilly bullets,it was more up to the task than I was
I shoot mostly UBR with some group thrown in

This was my 4th tack driver and best finish to date

I focus on Ground hog matches and Varmint Benchrest Silhouette held in Ridgway PA. Dabble a little in 600 yard. I haven't shot 1000 yard paper for a few years, if work ever slows down, id like to get back into that again
This years Tack Driver i shot a 6PPC with 66gr Joker Bullets

I shot a 6PPC barrel screwed into a Bat DS mounted in a Shehane Tracker stock. I went with this rather than my usual 6PPC rig because of the variable March scope mounted. Turning it down somewhat helped with the visual distortion caused by the mirage. I usually shoot short range group but actually shot better on the score targets. Finished dead center of the field. Not too bad for a 76 year old has been. Jim Bailey

Skill, I have none so I deserved my 100 combine place, also a zero on first score target, not one zero but all zeroes ( when you pull a bullet and drop all the powder in your chamber that's what you get). Add another zero on another target and a 4" plus group, went from 12th on group with one target to go to 84th with that last target and I'm dumb enough to go back.oh, the main question, 6PPC no turn neck (I still turned some) Barts Avengers, LT32 and Federal 205s.

I'm a IBS score shooter and just getting started shooting IBS 600 yard with a 6BRA.
I shot a 30 BR with what I thought was a decent but not great barrel.
I had one good score target but the rest of the targets got the best of me.
Next year will be another 30 but with some changes.

This was my first Tack Driver and I went with a 6 grinch and 12 twist barrel shooting 80gr Hillbilly bullets in a HV IBS legal gun with variable March scope. I shoot NBRSA group, IBS score and club matches at short, mid and long range. I mainly focus on short range group though and was surprised that I placed much better in score than group and was never able to shoot a group of less than 1". Other than maybe the first two targets in the morning I was not able to see either the scoring rings or the bullet holes other than a for a few brief periods when the mirage blew out. I had two good score targets of 48-1X on the first day where I just turned my scope down and aimed for the center of the circle and waited for the flag tails to drop briefly. It was a great time and a very enjoyable match. Everything was run well and the food was great, have registered for next year. It was great to see old friends and meet some new people.

Tom and I shot a 6ppc barrel on my LR rifle. We are both 1k shooters. I have been thinking about the best combo. I do think a LR rifle platform is a lot easier to shoot than a LV. And they track so good it helps with speed. I dont think anything will agg with a ppc at 300m but they move so much more than a 6BRA Im torn. I dont shoot short range matches over flags or score matches so I will never learn to read flags as well as those that do. So those ballistics would help. My two worst group target came from trying to pick. My best were when I ran like we do in LR. If your good with flags, a 22 pound ppc would be ideal IMO. If your not, a BRA may be better. Im torn on what I will bring next time. Might even be a 25 cal.
