tack welded firing pin retaining pin

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
Taking apart an older firing pin assembly in a Remington 700 and one side of the firing pin retaining pin appears to have been welded and ground flush. Anybody ever come upon this before?

Rifle is a small caliber from the mid 70s. Repair history unknown.

i have never seen that "Bubba Fix" before. I have heard of that pin coming partially out and locking up the action. If I remember correctly the gunsmith pulled the barrel and was not able to slide the pin back in far enough to remove the bolt. He had to shear the pin by driving the bolt back.

I machined the end off and was able to drive it out. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a short run of bolts that remington welded for some reason. --Jerry

Probably the mis-aligned cross pin hole to striker/cocking piece through hole.
And a big hammer that peened the cross pin!

Cross pins are installed from RH side to LH side from Rem.

Thanks Dan. Another way to say that is the pin goes in and comes out on the side with the slot. --Jerry

I had a major brain fart. I was thinking ejector retaining pin. Forget about what my earlier post said. I've been working on the front end of a bolt today and had that end on the brain. Nite Nite.
