Tablets for Electronic Targets

A question for those who shot the 2016 F-Class Nationals in Lodi, if you didn’t use the clubs’ tablet, what did you use and how did it work? Please list name, model and amount of storage space. Please don’t knock any model tablet. Just let me know what you used and how it worked. Planning on buy one and need info on the best.

Larry I'm no techy, but I do recall at nats in Lodi that they recommended as the week progressed that people the had apple I pads should use them. Talking with line directors there and guys from silver mountain and they were kinda pushing the I pads. But it was new then also. Maybe now they found something better. I hope the I pad is the ticket because I'm on one typing this. Lol

My 8" Samsung Galaxy S2 w/ 32GB works great with SMT and is a great all around tablet.

I see they arent affordable yet

"Affordable" is a relative term.

They cost less than getting started in F-Open, that's for sure. Some optics cost more.

Oh, and to the point of this post: I tried a late model Kindle, hated the darn thing. Bought an outdated (but still fully functional) smaller form-factor iPad at Walmart for ~ $250, haven't looked back. Works great, runs Apple's latest iOS, works fine with my SMT.

(I was one of the fellows at the Nats Wed-Sat AM helping out on the low end when folks needed a helping hand with the club's tablets.)

I used my daughters I pad and it worked awesome, it never lost connection all the way to the back of the parking lot. It was issued to her 4 years ago at the start of high school so i doubt that it is still available. Brian N

I have several of the newer generation ipads in the house/family, but I bought a well used and el cheapo gen 1 Ipad to use with the SMT system and it works perfectly. I use a generic pistol case as a holder, wedge the ipad on an steep angle in it, use a few bungie cords and done. If you are in the sun, you will want to shade it for two reasons, one, so it doesnt drown out the screen with light and two, it will overheat and shut down.

I recently purchase an Insignia 10.1" Tablet (Model NS-P10A7100) on Amazon to use at Port Malabar in Palm Bay, Florida with their Silver Mountain Target System. I've already used it twice and it worked perfectly. The tablet comes with 32gb internal memory and has a slot for a microSD card which expands the memory up to another 32gb. The Tablet cost me $95 on Amazon. I spent $11 on a cover which stands the tablet up in an inclined position for prone shooting. It has an android based operation system, which works just like my Samsung cell phone does - very user friendly. I would've happily spent 10 x's that $ for a tablet/pad for my competition shooting needs, but this one seems to work perfectly for my needs. Here's a link to the pad and cover I purchased:

So in addition to the rifle, bipod, rifle scope, ammunition, shooting mat, and spotting scope/stand that are generally considered "required equipment" for F-TR matches, I now must add an iPad to the list? I find that a hard tablet to swallow ;).

Here we have found the Samsung Galaxy Tablet A (2016) model t580 very good in conjunction with the SMT ETs. Other types can have connectivity issues when this doesn't, it is pretty good in the sunlight and battery lasts well. I have bought based on anothers use and subsequently recommended to someone else - we are all happy :)

I had 3 iOS devices at Lodi (2 iPads and an iPhone). Thanks to iCloud once one knew the wifi credentials they all did after the first day. All were rock solid. You do want a faster tablet, the viewing device does most of the heavy lifting in visualizing the shots, etc., the SMT server just collects and keeps the data. Performance/responsiveness difference between my iPad Pro and original iPad mini was quite noticeable.
