Switchbarrel options for F-Open

I am looking at a possible switchbarrel setup. Current setup is a 284 Shehane with 180gr hybrids. I am looking at doing the following:

Option 1:
284 Shehane for mid-range and long range normal conditions
7 SAUM for long range windy conditions

Option 2:
6 Dasher for mid-range
284 Shehane for long range

Option 3:
6 Dasher for mid-range light winds
284 Shehane for mid-range windy conditions and long range normal conditions
7 SAUM for long range windy conditions

What are your thoughts?

I think that the Shehane and SAUM are awful close together in performance. I'd pick one or the other.

The Dasher for close in calm days is an excellent choice. I have enough high-X count cleans at 600 to know it works.

I am thinking the same. 6 dasher for mid-range. 284 Shehane for everything else.

I had just finished a shehane/dasher switch barrel before shooting the SWN , the setup worked well as both barrels have the same 0 for elevation and less than an moa for windage . got my ass handed to me on the 600 relay with the Dasher, gota learn to read the wind.

I tried the whole switch barrel thing at first. Then I got tired of changing barrels out. Not to mention sometimes I needed more than one caliber at a match.

In the end I built three rifles.
6 dasher
.284 win
.300 wsm

Just trying to save you some time.

Trust me build a 284 or 284 variant and get to shooting. Spend less time switching barrels, worrying about what gun to shoot, and rezeroing your scope and just shoot.

After much thought and taking everyone's advice, I decided to just buy a whole bunch of barrels with the money I would have spent on new bullets, dies, barrels, and such.

The 284 Shehane is here to stay! ;D

How about 3 separate rifles, all ready to go with scopes dead-on windage zeroed:

A .284 for 300 to 1,000 yards...standard rifle.

A 6mm Dasher for as far as the wind will let you take it?

A 7mm RSAUM, generally for 1,000, but as far down as the wind makes you want to take it...900, 800, and not below 600 yards.

You have to carry a little more ammo. But, I skip taking the DASHER altogether if winds are forecast over 5 mph...it stays home a lot, unless it's a 300/500/600 yard match! Then, I carry a back-up .284!

You don't get any extra points, acclaim maybe, for well shooting the lighter caliber; but you get more winning points by having more than enough gun.

I do have another action on order with BAT. The same one I have actually. I'm actually thinking of 300 WSM...LOL. Go big or gome home???

I could also just do another 7mm of sorts just to give myself a little variety. Either 7 SAUM or 7/300 SAUM? Hell, maybe even a straight 284 or 7mm Walker.

I like your option #2 if you want multiple barrels, otherwise I really think the Shehane is hard to beat...

Ut...ooh?? :-\........ :D, bsumoba, just do up the darn .284 for a standard rifle. You could not do better if you're just going to have one rifle and a bunch of barrels...it will do you well at any of the F-Class distances. As soon as you can, you might try to back it up with another .284 (other caliber?), so that you can over come a "broken rifle" ruling during a match, if need be?.

please excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean..switch barrel....Are you changeing
barrels at the match? Please splain to me.. ;D

Yes you can change barrels and calibers quickly. Keep a record of the zero for that barrel in a range book, dial it in and go. Its a handy thing to do if you cant afford a full spare gun.

Have to say, sounds like a good idea..But I switch back to my 223 often....Right now I am building a 6.5 creedmoor..So if I were to switch,I would also have to switch bolt heads...But still,it makes sense..Thanks for clearing that up..John

The gun golf method really comes into play at fullbore matches like the Spirit of America.

I normally shoot a .284 straight through the 300 to 600 short ranges at the SOA, Raton, NM; and may/may not change out to magnum for the included long range 900 and 1,000 yard lines. It's also excellent for the Palma Match Course, 800, 900, and 1,000.
