switch barrel torque?

for those of you out there that are running a switch barrel rig... what type of torque do you use on your barrels? i have a new setup going on a defiance action with a couple barrels and this is new ground to me. i have read anywhere from 30 ftlbs to 65 ftlbs. i would think if the threads are cut proper and everything is square ( which it will be)that there is no reason that 30 should not work. thoughts...suggestions? thanks all

I'm kinda old skool. I just screw 'em on hand tight and just lean on the wrench a bit. I've never used a torque wrench. Taking them off takes just a medium rap or two with the palm of my hand. All mine are port wrenches, btw. Keep the threads clean, and don't be bashful with the grease.

Alf's advice is good concerning grease. Use an anti-seize compound on the threads. I like the copper stuff. I also use a port wrench to avoid stressing the action.

Some benchrest shooters spin their barrels on hand-tight and seem to shoot just fine. I use 40 lb-ft torque. I have never seen a test that demonstrates an advantage of one method over another. Whatever you do, do it consistently.

I have been told to go with the "clank" method. Spin it on hard till it goes "Clank" and your ready to go. Don't be confused with the "Clunk" sound which is terrible for accuracy.

Seriously - I have watched dozen of guys switch barrels next to me at matches and they all have just leaned on the action wrench a little to snug it up. All my switch barrels are based around Savages with a barrel nut and we have to set headspace every time so its a little different.

Luck, Tim

so from the above posts i gather that the torque doesn't matter so much as the consistency from one time to the next, whether it is 20 or 30 or 40 ftlbs.
