Question for those of you who have a switch barrel rig.......

How tight do you tighten barrels when changing????

Do you torque them or just go by feel???

If my torque wrench is handy, I torque to at least 45#'s, if not I pull them tight by hand, and then give the handle a good whack and that is close enough seeing I never had one come unscrewed...

To try something different with the pdogs this summer my setup was a rifle with a Stiller action and three barrels that I chambered for three different cartridges. To be able to change the barrels on the bench I put a pair of flats at each muzzle. I used to 10" adjustable wrench and snugged the barrels with one hand on the wrench and one on the receiver. I probably swapped barrels 10+ times during the trip and at none of the changes were the barrels loose, I had to use the wrench to start them spinning.

65 ft. pounds as suggested by my gunsmith who built them, if I'm using my Snap-on torque wrench.

With the Kelbly T-Handle rear entry wrench, a fair "yank" to tighten.

Have never had one come lose using either method. I just don't believe it's that critical.

I shoot a Gilkes/Ross. Mike recommended 35-50 lbs. like the others, hand tight then give it a good bump. Never had a barrel come loose in over 15 years of competition shooting and 15 barrels.

I torque mine to 55 foot pounds, I've heard anywhere from by hand to 100 ft lbs but 55 has always worked good, never came loose and easy to take apart just remember to use antisieze On the threads.

I have never changed a barrel but how do you attach a torque wrench to a barrel? I plan to order a custom barrel pre-threaded and not sure if I want to give it a shot or take it to a gunsmith.

I use a internal action wrench and it has the one end shaped to accept a socket that is used by the torque wrench, while the barrel is held solid in a barrel vise.....

I use and do the fallowing:
- Action Wrench (see attachment picture)
- Barrel Vise (see attachment picture)
1. From clean barrel and receiver threads, I apply "Pro Gold" (moly grease by ProShot).
2. Spin the barrel on by hand to a solid joint.
3. With a 1/2" wrench on the action wrench hex, I tighten them with a little "grunt", of no excessive strength.
