Swedish mauser by Gustaf?

Old Carl Gustaf Swedish Mauser 6.5-55 . Shooter? I like shooting "old guns" sometimes. I handled a pretty nice one today and wondered how they shoot. They wanted $450 for the old girl. Only missing the muzzle cap. Very clean, otherwise, and not a ding on the stock. Any one have one?

I may draw the ire of several people by saying this, but in my opinion the Gustaf is the finest shooting of all the military Mausers, it is a great buy and you will really enjoy it

DITTO!!!!

I have 4. Two M96 and two M96B's (like yours). With a sling, put these up against any rifle, at any distance (yes...1500 yards is VERY possible with this rifle/round).

Original ammo is "match grade" as well.

Got one, m96, sweet straight shooter, won a couple of club VMR matches. 38 gr 4064 topped off with 130 gr Norma golden target does the job.

joshb, your post implies you are looking for one. Is that the case?
If so, I may be able to help you out.

I am "sniffing around". What do you have to tempt me? I'm considering a few guns to round out my collection. A Mauser, which could be the Swede. A 1903-A3, and a JM stamped 45-70 Marlin I have put myself on a "restricted diet" of 1 gun per month, so I'm not in a hurry. I enjoy the hunt, almost as much as the acquisition. The last time I went looking for a 1903-a3, I came home with a K-31. I would enjoy seeing what you have.

A restricted diet aay. I tried it once and it turned into 200 rifles plus ,alas the divorce ended that tradition. But it sure is fun to collect nice specimens. The swedes are beautifully machined, in my mind the best of any with the exception of the Persian mauser. The 03's are machined a little rougher but we were at war and as far as I am concerned the finest bolt action battle rifle ever made and darn accurate. I hope you find what you are after because I couldn't get enough at one time,LOL.

I hear ya, Jon. My new diet should help me avoid the divorce thing. Collecting can be addictive. You pricked my interest, mentioning Persians. Care to elaborate? I read that the Swedes and Swiss had the best steel and craftsmen.

I bought a 1904 M96 years ago, and it has become my favorite Vintage bolt gun. An absolute joy to shoot, and the least finicky to load for. I do have to remember that the 300 meter sight setting has to be considered when aiming, but that could be simply part of my learning curve.
Super accurate and I look forward to hunting with her.

I've got a 1904 Gustaf with the 18in barrel in a sporter stock it came with a 3xWeaver that I changed to a Bushnell 1.4x18,,,, without a doubt my favorite bolt gun, worked up a load with CFE-223 & Sierra 120gr MK HPBT,,,, have only shot it to 100yds so far but putting 4-5 in the same hole when I do my part,,,, Hope to kill a couple of deer with it soon

I've never owned a Swede, but I have shot a rifle that was built around the Swede cartridge (6.5 X 55). It was probably the most accurate rifle I have ever shot in that caliber (6.5).

Well, after reading all the comments, I went back to the LGS and took another look at the swede. Turns out, I screwed up on the price. After pawing 20 odd guns, I got mixed up. They wanted $350, so I brought her home. She looks as good or better than the ones I saw on Gunbroker. And less money. All the numbers match and she's only missing the muzzle cap. Can't wait to shoot her. Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Problem is, I told a friend/gun addict, and now he wants one. I'm on the hunt for another!

Welcome to the club, we are happy campers as members shooting these gems. If someone can post an image I can forwad through my "smarter than me" phone, I would love to share the tightly tiger striped stock that she wears. She always turns heads at the range, and I am seriously considering scoping her to participate in a Vintage Sniper Match/CMP sponsored event. May be cost prohibitive to find a correct mount, but I understand that some substitute scopes are permissible under the rules.

I just finished cleaning up my new Swede. Took a while to get all the cosmoline out of it. I'm amazed and happy with the bore on this gun. Bright and shiny, all the way through. Good lands and grooves. Found 1 scratch on the stock. Found a little light rust on the bolt that polished off in a few minutes, on the wheel. This gun is in great shape for being 102 years old! Thanks again, to all, for the responses. Can't wait to shoot her. Jpretle came through, with a second gun, for my buddy, so I'm looking for load info, bullets, and brass. I should be at the range, soon, to try her out.

I've not seen that. Might be an owner "add on". Here's my first load work up with my Swede. I really like them! Mine is an M38 carbine that I scoped.

Ive had longings to build a Twede. You may not know what a Twede is ? Well it is the way a real redneck comes up with a 6.5 x 55 on a Mauser. I have several Truks , and they have the small receiver threads, but are a 98 large ring action. If one can find a Swede barrel it will screw right in to the Turk action. This may be the best way to have a 6.5 x 55 cause of the stronger action. Or the svelte light weight small ring originals may handle and shoot so well the Twede is just a step down the ladder. But it is not to be, as finding a Swede barrel has not happened so far. And Ive had Gary looking, and they don't call him the Mauserman for nothing.
