swaging military brass/ reaming how to get rid of lip

so the 308 brass i have been using i have to use a lyman pocket reaming tool to get rid of the "crimp" or swage or whatever it is called. it works fine but it leaves the slightest hint of a raised lip around the primer pocket and messes up my measurements when checking headspace and coal.

has anyone else encountered this and is there an easy fix. i was thinking of using the widest angle neck deburrer(i have a narrow one for vld bullets) and seeing it is cut it off but i need something with a pretty wide angle cause the lip is way back on the radius. actually that probly won't work as the deburrer will bottom out on the pocket

thanks for any suggestions from anyone who has run into this problem

If the reamer is leaving a raised burr, the most convenient way to remove it would be a regular twist drill (handheld). A 1/4" to 3/8" drill should pull the burr without touching the bottom of the pocket. Just don't get heavy-handed with it. You're only wanting to pull the burr off, not cut a large chamfer.

Get a 3/8" diameter round steel grinding bit for Dremel Moto Tools. It should easily peel off that ridge. Ace Hardware, Lowe's, Home Depot....

Take a case to the store to measure, a bigger one may be better.

I avoided this by using the RCBS primer swager die. They are $30ish and don't leave any ridge at all. Just a thought.

I have also used the Lyman cutter but the swaging die worked better.

Yup I too have the RCBS swager.. Works for me.. Dillon is great too I have heard. Both are ~$100

thanks guys! dillon or rcbs it is.

every time i try to go easy with a drill bit on something soft, it never works out for me, it always seems to jam in. bult i like the idea, the angle is pretty good for getting the ridge

I used the Dillion Swage Tool on LC 308 brass. I had to pay attention to the set up to get the right amount of swage. The depth the swage enters the case and keeping the case center in the tool are very important.

Go to "InLine Fabrication" They make jigs which will aid you in setting up your Dillon swagger.

The simple answer is the lip will disappear when you fire it the first time.

I have swaged over 30K 223/5.56 rounds. Most were done with the RCBS die mounted swager, the rest were done on a Dillon. When I swage my brass, I like a nice rounded lip, that will allow for easy primer seating, and I will not have to swage again. That material (the straight wall with a bit of a protrusion into the pocket) has to go somewhere. So it forms a slight lip on the case head. I have measure many and it runs about 0.001" in height. A minor affect on case head to datum length.

I have played around with reamers, and just wasn't satisfied with the job they did. I recover a lot of range brass, and probably 80% of the brass I find that has been reamed has been overdone. Either the folks doing the reaming aren't watching what they are doing, or they are using the wrong tools.

The "lip" may be greater on large rifle primed brass. But I have swaged quite a bit of LC large rifle primed brass and not noticed much difference. I always uniform my flash holes after swaging. The rod can tend to close off part of the flash hole with the nub that is left from punching the flash hole.
