Electronic Targets at Manatee?

aaaa_zpsrwceyy90.jpg

Over the past several months we have been investigating the use of electronic targets on our newly extended 600 yard Bench Rest range. This type of system would allow us to hold NRA high power events without the need for the more typical pits and associated raise/lower target frames. We could hold Mid-Range F-Class matches, full distance CMP and across the course High Power matches. These targets are not cheap, but much less expensive than installing a typical pit system. The even bigger advantage electronic targets have over a typical pit system is that the shooters do not have to pack-up and head to the pits to do target service. That is a significant advantage in how fast individual matches can be run, easier on old bones like mine and better yet, no possible safety issues with sealing and unsealing pits after each rotation. The NRA is going through some growing pains regarding the use of electronic targets, but has finally taken the huge step in installing them at the new 600 yard CMP range at Talladega, AL. The system we are investigating works on the same principle, at a significant discount. Information is outlined on their web site. http://www.silvermountaintargets.com/
Some minor work may be required on the bench rest range to shoot with up to 10 firing positions, but many of the modifications may be started by the time you read this. This new 600 yard Bench Rest range may turn out to be the jewel and centerpiece at our facility.

If we proceed with the purchase of electronic targets, there will be a need for more shooters and volunteers to help hold matches and maintain the equipment. I along with others will submit our final review outline to the Board at the next general meeting on June 8 th. If you have any comments regarding this project, pro or con, please feel free to contact me at stevekrauss@live.com.or Snafu12@aol.com

The best use of the 600 yd. range at Manatee , is with electronic target systems, Tom P. F- Class Match director at Manatee, Myakka City, Florida

The best use of the 600 yard range a Manatee is shooting real clays stapled to a real fence. If you can have more fun than that playing F troop you need your head examined.

Tom,
Glad your club is considering the electronic target system we use at Blakely. I didn't think I would like it until I tried it and was quickly won over. Not pulling targets and having the feedback on group placement/velocities, etc that can be recaptured in a photo for later evaluation is fantastic. Call me an ole F'er anytime ! No sweat off my back.

I have not shot 600 in a long time , but for the shooters that are dedicated to shoot the smallest group possible ( less than 4" ) , the camera system can not be beat . Instant feedback , and more shooting time.

Does it come with points AKA handicap. Get it ? Golfing .
A camera system is great , instant feedback for those that want to make adjustments .
I'm gonna start using my system for 2 and 300 yd 22 lr shooting at our local range again , mirage during the summer makes those lr holes hard to see .

Wonderful.

I shoot the BR gong and IBS Style matches all the time. Would love to have say and IBS Style match there instead of at the regular range.

I vote yes, YES, YES!

It would be nice to see 600 IBS as well. Since pits seem to be out of the question I say put in the electric targets. Just make sure you can still set up IBS benchest targets and not interfere with the electrics. It would make a sweet 600 yard range, quite protected from the wind and I am sure you would draw a lot of the Carolina guys for the IBS matches in the colder months.

There's IBS shooters in Fl. that travel to Ga and N.Carolina. Some of them have been to Manatee, they would show, not to mention some of the Malabar f/class shooters.

I think the use of electronic targets is a good idea for the club. There is a disadvantage for HP, F class shooters and that is making wind calls. Yes you can see your target and shot placement but not the other targets. Did you just go low right or did everyone go low right? Was there a wind change? Many coaches not only look at the shooters target but those of other competitors when doping the wind.

I live about 190 miles from Manatee (on the east coast of Florida near West Palm Beach) and have shot the 600 yard gong match a couple of times in the past year. It's a 3 hour trip each way.

The people at the Manatee club are a great bunch- very friendly and helpful to new shooters. I can't say enough good things about them!

I would definitely shoot 600 yard F class matches if they were held at Manatee (as long as they do not conflict with the F class matches at Malabar).

I was at Manatee during one of the vendor's presentation of electronic targets. One option was to view several targets during competition, not just your own. Not sure if the chosen electronic target company has this option, but hopefully, it does.

Steve, can you give some feedback to this issue, please?

@blairf, the demo you saw at Manatee would have been the one done by Wayne Forshee, the US dealer for my company Silver Mountain Targets. The design of our gear originates in the fullbore/highpower/F-Class world, and pretty much every engineer, programmer and dealer involved in our company is an active F-Class / Palma / highpower etc shooter. We all know that one of the wind-reading tricks available to a shooter is taking a peek at the other targets out there, along with all the other possibilities like mirage, flags, grass/dust etc.

A lot of the features that people need/want/hate/want-to-get-rid-of are just a matter of the display device software. When we design software we take a guess at what we would like to see when we are shooting and program accordingly, but this ends up just being a starting point - our software really starts to get good when we start listening to what people tell us after they have shot a bit on our gear and start offering us suggestions for improvements.

Here is a screenshot I took during a 1000 yard match at the beginning of March in Blakely, GA This shooter has finished firing his string on target number four:

What you can also see is that the most-recently fired shot on Target 6 went high, number 8 has a center-X, number 10 is a bit to the right, and number 12 is pretty central. In this particular case there isn't any particular trend or useful hint/warning being told by the shots on neighboring targets, but in other cases there might be something that might help the shooter avoid some lost points (maybe a few of the others lose their shots upwind, for example).

Here's a newer screenshot, taken last weekend at a 1000 metre benchrest match in British Columbia:

This match was fired on the NRA 600Y target but at 1000 metres (approx 1100 yards) so the one-MOA grid marks look pretty coarse on the target face!! I think this was the winning group fired in the Hunter Rifle class, from a Tikka 7mmRemMag firing Berger 180s. Here you can see that we are displaying the total score and group size. You can also see that his sighter shot is identified as "S1", and while it is shown to the shooter it is not included in the calculation of score or group size.

We shot Silver Mountain Targets at Camp Blanding yesterday for the first time. I can say, I liked them. They have 8 for starters and may get 8 more.

Port Malabar has ordered 5 Silver Mountain target systems. The hope is we can install all 20 positions after we have worked with them for a while.

If Manatee can afford them, by all means do it. I see F-Class shooters coming over from the east coast if it is not on Port Malabar's mid range weekend (second of the month). There is also a large contingent of competitors looking for 600 bench rest shooting.
