Surgeon Single shot for my Daughter

I just wanted to show you guys a couple pictures of my daughters rifle. I have not ever built a flashy rifle because I have always felt most rifles are for hunting and should be a dull color and not flashy. But my daughter shoots the matches with me and after a lot of harassment of her shooting a Remington, this is the result. I took our Surgeon single shot action and stoned the surface to get rid of the tool marks. Then sent it to a friend for engraving. Then had it nickeled and chambered it in a 6.5 x 47 with a 28” Krieger 1-8.5 twist barrel. McMillan F class stock.
We had a match coming up and no time for testing loads. I took 123 Scenars 37.5 grains RL 15, Fed 205M, Lapua brass. And got a zero for her at 100 and 500 and long story short she beat me at the balloon match in Alex.

Thanks
Preston Pritchett

The tooling marks can be removed. In order to make our action round we have to rotate it 600 times. What we do is have it on a 4th axis milling machine and we rotate the action .6tents of a degree and make a cut with a 1/4" end mill spinning 12,000 rpms and moving at 250 inches per min to the other side. Then rotate another .6tents of a deg and make another cut etc, etc. This is how we make it round and still have our built in scope rail, recoil lug and bolt stop made from one pc of material. This is all done after the action is heatreated. A round action is simple to make. Put it in a lathe and turn the outside in under a minute with a excellent surface finish. But you loose some of your rigidness and reliablity and accuracy by not haveing a built in scope rail and recoil lug. Most of our actions are built into tactical and hunting rifles and they blast and coat them with a nonreflective color. On these rifles the machining marks are never seen. If your going to blue our action if you will blast it with glass beads it make it a little smoother. What I done on my daughters is I took some polishing stones I bought from Mcmaster Carr. I started off with 320 grit and a small cup of water. Dip the stone and rub a bit, dip and rub until the metal doesn't show no tool marks. Then go to 600 and take out the marks that the 320grit stone put in. If enough time is spent you can make it shine almost like a mirror. We use to have polishing partys at a local tool and die shop. When we got ready to send the dies out to the cusomer we would shut the shop down and everyone would polish. Anyhow a mirror finish is not needed to do what is done on the above action. I would est I spent 5-6 hrs on it. There is a guy in the next town over and if you guys need his name let me know, He done the engraving. Around $325 is what he charged for this. After he done his work I took the action to the city and they charged $75 to have it nikled.
Let me know if I can help you guys.
Thanks
Preston
