Suppressor guys...

Do you load develop with or without the can? 30 degree day today and I have my big Milwaukee fan to keep mirage away and help with heat.

6-47L 105 and 108 class bullets

If the can is going to be used for what the load is being developed for you need to have the can on it for the load development process, anything hung on the end of the barrel will change the harmonics and also the point of impact.

What he said. I do load development with the suppressor on and then take it off to see if my POI or group size changes.

I have a couple where the POI change is 0.1 mil and there is no determinable change in group size. Those are the ones I like.

If you're worried about keyholing then make some more rounds for your lowest charge. This way you're verifying the minimum charge is stabilizing and then put the suppressor on.

I have this 1:5 barrel that I use 220 SMK and 190 SubX subsonic and I was advised to start unsuppressed with a few extra of each to make sure they stabilized as I worked my way up. This way you don't have a baffle strike.

Working a 55 grain bullet in a 1:7/1:9 barrel, I didn't worry too much about that. Same with common weights in a 1:10 twist with 308 and 300 WM. But there are instances where it's best to verify the bullets will stabilize first.

Worked good. Shot about 70 rounds. 2 sets of about 25 with two different bullets with a 5 min break in between, and 20 for kicks of an old load for old bbl after at steel . All in about 60 min. I left the cover off of my suppressor the whole time and had my fan running on med. the whole time pointed at the suppressor.

If I was going by general experience, my loads perform better suppressed. So if I find a good load without, they have always been better when the suppressor was used. So in warm weather I do load work unsuppressed. Barrel diameter/length seem to play a factor in any poi shift between the with or without the suppressor. Long, thin barrels more poi change.

^^ I agree with this guy^^ I can only get three to five shots before my can is putting off amazing heat waves!! so when it comes to load work up, I do it sans suppressor. In every case, it has shot just as good (or better) after putting the can on, I just need to make the POI adjustment after the load workup to account for the can and it's good. My can takes FOREVER to cool down. I don't have the time to wait for that. Much easier to add it after the fact, Your mileage may very ;)

I made sure my subsonic loads were flying right before I screwed on the suppressor. For supersonic loads I just started load work up. This was in my 300BO's.

On the normal rifles I just started load work up as I knew my suppressor was straight.

Hey Fellers, I've owned and used cans for 15yrs or more. Have worked up loads for handguns and rifles and find the above to be my own experience as well.... John
