Suppressed Short Barrel Hunting Rifle Build Suggestions

20161127_182803.jpg My kids have used a 7mm SAUM rifle basically a savage with a 20 inch CBI barrel. It shoots 168 berger VLD hunters at 2950 or so with 4831SC. Rifle shoots groups in .25 with daughter driving it but she is in Marines now but my boy shoots under .5 most of time. it has taken whitetail from 80 to 400rds and all deer have either gone right down or no more then 30yds. CBI barrels seem to be on fast side even my daughters f class .308 barrels from them were fast. we shot a deer this year with a 140 Nosler Partition at 80yds and this bullet completely blew up inside deer. Deer died right there but did not like how it came apart considering it did nor hit bone goin in. Berger have always passed through leaving large exit wound even when shot through shoulders.

If Todd Hodnett runs 20" barrels on magnum calibers, that's good enough for me.

Having used 30" barrels in the tree stand, I can say they suck for that purpose.

With a short barrel, there is no doubt that you will lose a little velocity, so you will want a heavy bullet to carry the kill out to 800 or more yards. Don't get me wrong the 6 and 6.5's are good rounds but with reduced velocity you may want to consider larger calibers with heavy bullets.
Personally I would go with a 300 WM with a Sierra 200 spitzer boat tail. You are going to need to dope it out for the long ranges and you will need good glass and a range finder. If recoil is not a problem for you then even a 338 WM would be better with a 225 or heavier boat tail at the same or a bit higher velocity as the 300.
For the range you specified and the windy conditions a boat tail bullet is going to be desired.

Just my opinion and preferences.
