Suppressed rifle, what caliber?

I finally decided to move forward on a suppressor purchase. I plan to use an old Model 670 Winchester (Model 70 Pushfeed with ADL bottom metal). I can go long or short action with this thing with mag box and bolt stop changes. It's a 0.473" bolt face.

What chambering would be happy with a 21" max barrel length? I was thinking of a 284 Win, but it might be handicapped by the short barrel? I'd like to be able to unscrew the suppressor and use the rifle for big game hunting as well.

I have a feeling that the 308 might be best with such a stubby barrel. I'd like for the rifle to be able to get to 1000 yards without too much issue.

Thanks for any and all insight and advice.

I run a 30 cal suppressor on my 24" savage 308, my 308 AR and 2 AR15s including a 10.5" SBR. The loudest with the suppressor is obviously the SBR, but even that is tolerable under a covered firing line. As far as caliber goes, Id say 308 win. Run heavy bullets, 185-210gr and you should still be able to make it t 1K. Regardless of caliber, you will have more difficulties getting to 1K with a 21" barrel than you would with a 24+" barrel, but that should go without saying.

I'd go 22" and 6.5 Creedmoor....but I don't like recoil and have no experience what the 7mm do with a short barrel like that.

The .260 and .308 both perform well thru a 20" barrel.

The .260 & 140gr bullets is a great combination thru a 20" barrel. I too run a suppressor and I will not build another rifle that isn't suppressor ready.

I am getting 2812fps with the 140 Berger VLD Hunting Bullets in my 20" 260rem. With the 7" TBAC 30ps, it is very enjoyable to shoot, plus super accurate.

redxds,

If you have a quality suppressor, it should suppress fine. I run TBAC's on my centerfire rifles and they perform great even on my 300win mag and 7RSAUM.

Another thought (we will not bore you with how I figured this out too late :o ) - regardless of whether you choose a .308 caliber round or a smaller caliber, get a 30 caliber suppressor. I went for a 22 caliber suppressor threaded for 1/2-28, the thread commonly used on .223 AR barrels, and realized that I had really limited the use(s) of the suppressor. Had I bought a 30 caliber suppressor threaded for the 5/8" thread common on them, I could shoot it on any firearm 30 caliber or under, including ARs, just that the ARs would require either an adapter from 1/2-28 to the 5/8" thread (one local smith makes these all the time for local shooters with ARs), or an upper with a bull barrel threaded to the 5/8" thread. Once you pay the transfer tax and take possession of the suppressor, the BATFE doesn't care how many different firearms you transfer it among.

Take a good hard look at the .300 Whisper: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.300_Whisper if you're up to a little work and some fun with a Wildcat. Keep life interesting. ;)

Suppressors are fun but why suppressed out to 1000yds ? I use mine with my .308 @ under 60 yards and shoot sub-sonic 220gr RN at just over 1000fps. Hammers the deer close range ,in the neck/ heart/ spine area but they will run a lot longer if a bad shot is made because it does not give them the hydrolic shock with sub-sonics. Will work well with super sonics, just not real quiet over the long distance, as you can still shoot suppressed at the bench with little to no hearing protection . I really like mine for shooting I general let alone hunting too.
