Suppressed 22lr or PCP

Depending on what you will be shooting, if you have an 18” plus rifle, you might just try CCI quiets, or CB longs. Both are roughly rated at 700 fps, difference is a 40 grain bullet in the Quiet, vs 29 grains for the Long.

They won’t cycle a semi auto, and will still be loud in a pistol.

I shoot them from 26” barrel and velocity is about 750 fps. The 29 grain CB’’s have no problem knocking down rimfire silhouettes at 50 yards..

Biggest problem is that buying ammo isn’t near as much fun as a new rifle, or suppressor. It is cheaper

220SMK subs load development 50yd with CFE Black. Not only are they silent, hit like a freight train but they are also very accurate.

Also, here my 125 TMK/H110 supers load. 7 groups, 5 shots each @ 100yd final load confirmation with a Gen2 Razor on it to test accuracy, bipod and rear bag from the bench. 5for5 after this on steel @ 300, 400, and 500 Meters. Flat out shoots.

Be aware of the rabbit hole a PCP will lead you down. A good compressor is $1K. Hand pump gets old quick. Some springers tear up scopes. The upside is that, at this time, PCP's are not considered firearms. That will change!

I have 2 PCP's and they will shoot as well as a 22RF out to 50 yards. You can make a simple pellet trap for your backyard. Pellets are cheap compared to 22 RF.

My boys and I shoot Umarex Origins (22 cals pcp's). Very backyard friendly! We tried subsonic 22 ammo and these origin rifles are Quieter than a 22LR CB long. The Origins have built in suppressed barrels. THey are not high end guns but they easily shoot 2 moa at 100 yards and when you learn how to read the wind, they are easily 1 moa or better with good H&N 21.5 gn pellets. We fill our rifles with the RovAir compressor and this thing is a game changer! Fast and reliable and at a decent price. I fill several guns and several times a day and it keeps chugging along. The Origin is a 350$ gun and I have shot groups in the zero's at 50 yards with it. You have to do your homework and find the right pellets! Not all pellets shoot the same. We often shoot 200 shots a day (or more) when the weather is right. Try doing that on a daily basis with a rimfire! You'll quickly pass my total budget (guns, scopes, compressor and pellets) just from buying decent 22 ammo after a while. While at first there is an investment in a pcp, the benefit far outweighs the up front cost in the end. Our 22's don't get any love these days.. It's either PCP's or centerfire's. I have a suppressor, just the cost of primers alone keeps me going back to shooting the air rifle 99 out of 100 times!

It's the product of a bet with a buddy who was into 300blk and I had been resisting for years to jump on the wagon.

He told me 300blk was a fun range toy but wasn't accurate. I set out to find out how true that was and built my first blackout. Goal was eyeball accuracy from 100yd and in. This was not for any type of long range shooting.

I went through 3 barrels and endless load development/testing with many different powders and bullet combos.. I about gave up and agreed with my buddy that 300blk couldn't be accurate in an AR. 2-3" groups from best of the 3 barrels to buckshot the others...

I decided to test 1 more barrel and it was this Rainier UltraMatch Shilen barrel. It has shot lights out from the start with 125 SMK, 125 TMK, 110 VMAX and 110 Tac-TX all with H110.

AA1680 and CFE Black have been great for 200gr+ subs.

Rainier sent me some more barrels to review/test and I tested their identical barrel to this but it's their latest Gen2 (Criterion Blank) and it shot just as accurate with my go to 125 TMK load..

From my testing, the barrel makes all the difference in 300blk AR accuracy.

I have three 300BLK rifles...two SBR AR's that I built and a Ruger American bolt gun. I have not had any accuracy issues with any of them.

For the AR's, one is a 8.5" Wilson Combat Match barrel with a 1:7 twist and the other is a 7.5" Faxon Match barrel with a 1:5 twist. The barrel length on these will limit accuracy at longer distance, but both of these shoot about .75" groups at 50 yards and 1" groups out to about 75 yards. The Faxon is a fairly inexpensive barrel, but I wanted to try a 1:5 twist and options are limited for a 1:5. But even being an inexpensive barrel, it's been great.

The bolt gun is a 16" barrel and it's been a 1moa rifle at 100 yards with the right load. 300BLK isn't really known as a precision cartridge, but mine have all had acceptable accuracy.

I couldn’t agree more. Components in both the rifle and load, assemblers with care makes all the difference in the world.

Two sighters then score. 100 yards, 7” AR, 6x Scope.



12” Model 7 at 200 yards.



My wife shooting her Handi Rifle. 200 yards, subsonic 230 Bergers. 3X green dot, front pillow type bag, no rear support.
Looks like the munitions department let down with a high ES. 2” dot on a 4”x6” card.

If you can’t get MOA, it’s not the cartridge.

Love to see others taking the time to work it out. Fun versatile cartridge.

85 grain Maker bullet. Had to cheat and use an 18” barrel to brake 3000 fps.

A suppressed bolt action with 110 grain and less subs will give a 22 suppressed a run for its money in the quiet race.

If you decide to get a suppressor, don't get the .22 if you have any plans on using it on a .223 or .308 etc. My .30 cal suppressor works just fine on a .22 but a .22 doesn't work on anything bigger. Why jump through the hoops twice when once will do it all.

What would you do? Just looking for something a little different for shooting at the house. Have a good berm, not looking to be quite because of neighbors. More for myself not having to wear hearing protection, and not getting my 2 dogs all twisted up!! Just want to shoot small steel plates at 50 yds or so.

Toss up as far as noise.

PCP has no waiting period but generally requires compressor and bulk tank.

Rimfire has superior ballistics and the option for match grade ammo, but costs a lot more per shot and you never know when you’ll be able to buy you next case of match ammo.

Airgun slugs have much better ballistics than pellets but in my experience the pure accuracy doesn’t offer an accuracy improvement until you’re over 100y or fighting serious wind.

PCP does have the possibility of very good accuracy with slugs (just because I haven’t managed excellent slug accuracy doesn’t mean it’s not possible) but slugs still won’t keep up ballistically with rimfire. The very top slug setups are competitive but I can tell you it’s a long road to get there unless you buy a perfectly sorted rig.

I have 4 or 5 22lr suppressors.. 2 stay in 22LR custom built AR's, one stays on a Ruger MarkIV 22/45 Tactical and the other for my RimX when I want to shoot it suppressed.. I have multiple dedicated 9mm for AR9, MP5, pistols, 45 cans, 5.56 cans, 30 cal cans. I sure wouldn't want to hang say my Rugged Surge 7.62 off my 22lr pistol or 22lr sbr AR

Also, one major reason I would never want to shoot 22lr in a centerfire can is how unbelievably dirty they are.

You don't really need to clean a cf can, once in a blue moon.. and that's also the manufacturer recommendation not mine

22lr cans on the other hand require regular cleaning if you actually shoot them...

It's really much simpler than this thread indicates - you need a rimfire suppressor and a PCP. Heck, get a PCP with a threaded barrel and use the suppressor on it.

I agree with this 100%. I would not use my centerfire suppressors on my 22lr guns for the simple fact they they are really dirty.

I've been waiting for months for my "free" SiCo BOGO Omega 300 suppressor to be made, and I believe I'll be waiting many more months.

I'm in need of a few more 22 cans, as I'm tired of swapping... I was going to order a CGS Hydra, but put it off for a few days. Now, they're outta stock.

I think with all the <1 week stamp approvals, people are stocking up on batch submissions.

As far as 300BO goes, I prefer to shoot 190gr subs in this 8.2" AR. They'll also stay subsonic out of my 16.25" RAR. The suppressor below is the SiCo Omega 36M mounted with their ASR system. I spent a small fortune on 10-15 flash hiders and brakes.

I also have a stupid-cheap BCA 10.5" AR with a cheap Vortex LVPO. The goal was a low-ball, budget build. I succeeded and so far, it's been sub-MOA.

One thing to remember with 22 rimfire suppressors is to make sure it is owner serviceable i.e. be able to take down and clean. Some suppressors like my Griffin Armament Resistance 22 Modular is manufacturer rated for 223 Remington also.

Yes & no (IMHO).

My 1st rimfire can was/is not serviceable. However, it is probably close to 15 years old and has seen, probably, tens of thousands of rounds. It still works perfectly fine. I just spray some carb cleaner in there every now and then, shake it up, wash it out with soap & water, and call it good.

Granted, my next can will be serviceable (only because it is a good price). I wouldn't let that aspect make a break the deal if shopping on a budget.
