Super 14 .223 contender reduced loads?

Anyone ever play with reduced loads in one? Id love to find a way to get a 35gr vmax around 2000 fps. Trying to mimic a 22mag if possible without buying ANOTHER barrel ( Ive got too many :) Im all out of trail boss but not sure if it would get that high.

I can't speak to the velocity but find a load for the 221 Fireball and try that. I have and it worked for me.
I shoot it in a 7" AR pistol with a can. I did have to tweak the buffer a bit to get it to run the way I wanted. You won't have that issue in the Contender.
Use your good judgement, if you don't think it is safe, don't do it. Just because it works for me doesn't mean it will work for you. My lawyer made me say that.

Check Google for Blue Dot loads in the 223 also.

James Calhoon wrote a couple articles about reduced loads for the 223 on his site. If I remember correctly he used Blue Dot. Sounds like a fun project, replicating a 22 mag would be a hoot. Glad to see T/C is back making frames and barrels, I may need some more.

I've shot lots o' light bullets in both 222 & 223 with Blue Dot. I have not tried it with a can, but am placing that on the project list...Were you able to find the Calhoon article?

Try this
HODGDON® H4895® REDUCED RIFLE LOADS
For Youth Hunting, Informal Target, and Plinking
__________________________________________________________________________
Hodgdon Powder Company has found that H4895 can be loaded to reduced levels. H4895
was chosen because it is the slowest burning propellant that ignites uniformly in reduced
charges. To create reduced loads, the 60% formula is recommended.
Find the H4895 load in the Reloading Data Center for your caliber and bullet.
Take the maximum H4895 charge listed and multiply by 60% (.6). The load may
be adjusted up from there to achieve the desired velocity and accuracy.
This works only where H4895 is listed. DO NOT use in a cartridge where H4895
is not shown.
Example: 30-06 cartridge with 125 gr. Sierra SP bullet. Max load shown in the Reloading
Data Center with H4895 is 53.7 grains. 53.7 X .6 = 32.2 grains. The shooter begins
with this load, and may work up from there to obtain the desired velocity and
accuracy for his reduced load.

I did thanks! Im going to have to try a few things out. H4895 and trail boss I’ll try first.

T/C is back?!?!

There’s an old school published load of 2400 powder and 40 gr projectile for 221 fb and 222 rem, I want to say in the neighborhood of 16 gr. It’s fantastic.

This has been done many years ago in central Wisconsin by several shooters using the powders suggested. It almost cost one shooter his life as his T/C rifle exploded in his face! A couple other t/c's were damaged be veryyyyyyyyyyyyy careful reducing 223 loads that much. the suggestion to do a 221 fireball is a valid one I did a fireball with a fast twist shooting 80gr bullets that was a tack driver and veryyy affective on p-dogs to 300.

Don't use 16gr of 2400. Way too hot.
Was just using my google-fu for reduced 223 loads and there was an article on the castboolit site about someone using a 40 gr jacketed bullet and HP-38. Another was using H4895 for reduced loads. Check it out for yourself, but as pointed out above, about downloading H4895 for what you want.
