Sunrise coyote kill.

11-12-11 - San Saba, TX - Williams Ranch, Buffalo Creek Hunt Club
Morning hunt out of our South rifle stand.

While deer hunting last weekend I shot this young female coyote at approximately 125 to 135 yds just before sunrise. I was a little late getting into the blind Saturday morning it was already breaking daylight. I had just gotten two of the four blind windows opened when I spotted movement, a small coyote moving across a narrow opening approximately 180 yards out just east of the feeder. It was heading into a bunch of heavy cedars trees which line the creek bed in the area. I always carry a small mouse squeaker in my backpack, it's located in a small external front mesh compartment. I'd had set my pack in a corner of the 4'x4' deer blind floor so I immediately give the squeaker a couple of kicks with my foot and reached for my rifle. The yote hearing the squeaks turned and started to head straight for the rifle stand, being she was coming in from a direction that would put her somewhat down wind and being I didn't yet have that side window open and knew the noise of doing so would most likely alert her I elected to stick my rifle and upper body out the front window being she wasn't now visible and the cedars trees between us provided concealment. She hung up somewhere around 75 yds out still behind the trees, she either heard me chamber a round or more likely she winded me. I next spotted her trotting away down a small narrow tree lined opening. Hoping to stop her I licked the back of my right hand and started sucking trying to imitate a injured rodent, it worked because she stopped and turned presenting me a easy broadside shot. Don't let anyone tell ya that a 6x47 Lapua shooting a A-max's 105 gr bullet won't get the job done, that is unless your wanting to save the hide, as the bullet produced a huge exit wound.

Wishing y'all safe hunting.
RJ

Nice shot RJ and by the looks of the exit wound i don't think it would have ever ran off. That 105 devastated it. Keep up the good work and get out their as often as you can.

Atta boy RJ, kill all them fawn eatin' bastards! I took a Raccoon at 98 yds. with my 6.5X47 Lapua and the 123 gr. A-Max last week. It was walking slightly quartering towards me and the bullet entered its neck and exited its off shoulder completely removing the shoulder and leg. DRT is an understatement. Later in the week I shot a 100 lb.'ish whitetail at 60 yds. with the 168 gr. A-Max at 2860 fps MV from my .308 Winchester. Didn't have time for a head or neck shot as it was walking through a small opening and about to disappear so I dropped just behind the shoulder and sent one. It was another DRT however did thrash a bit before expiring. As you can see by the picture I can't recommend this bullet for short range or high terminal velocity shots. The bullet did not make it through the chest cavity and the offside was not damaged at all. I included a Doe shot at 60 yds. with my .264 LBC AR and the 123 gr. A-Max but head shots of course are not a good representation of bullet performance. I also yolked a spike buck with the .308/168 gr. A-Max from 40 yds. however it was also a head shot, to minimize meat loss, with instant incapacitation. The Medulla Oblongata/Apricot is a smallish target but at the reduced ranges the Deer presented themselves it was effortless.
