Sunday six gun single action question.

I feel the need for a single action six gun. Living in Texas now, it just seems right. I sat with a local for a while that had a nice collection of old Colts. They were beautiful guns and I really wanted one of them. The “problem” was that they were collector guns. $8000 to 20,000. I just want a shooter. Something I might drop on the ground and not freak out. Does anybody have a suggestion for a good quality shooter under $2000? I have no experience with the Italian renditions. I have seen some American made models but I don’t know. Looking for guidance.
Thanks in advance! Josh

Ruger Vaquero has always tugged at me heat strings.
In 45 long colt of course

Yup! I feel the tug! 45 long Colt for sure. I just don’t know anything about them. I want a quality gun, not junk. I’m an open book! I’d like advice from guys that own them! Please! Where are you, LarryDScott? Didn’t you have a pair?

Ruger’s are of course pretty darn nice. However I don’t like the new safe types. I prefer the original three screw traditional action.
Which ever one I get next will be of that type and I will only pack with five shells loaded. jd

I've owned quite a few Ruger single actions and only had one that had a problem. That one is a Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum whose bore is a bit over-size, causing me to cast slightly larger bullets to stop the leading caused by this condition. Otherwise, I have had them in .357, .41, .44 and .45 Colt and all performed well without breaking the bank. Colts, while nice, have always seemed to struggle getting throating to match bore diameter and causing accuracy issues as a result. Rugers are also considerably stronger than Colts and even have special load sections in most manuals.

I dont know a lot about wheel guns but Ruger has been making them for a long time and I know many that own them and love them.

For a single action id go with ruger or even better freedom arms, but for me id go with a s&w of your preferred flavor and forget the single action nostalgia or get a ruger wrangler in 22 just to say you got one.

Dusty: I have a nickel plated 19 in .357 and a stainless 29 in 44 mag. I just have a hole in my collection I need to fill.;) Do you REALLY think I’m under gunned?:eek::D

Nostalgia what kinda comment is that?

I will say this, I had or have Rugers, Colts, Smith&Wesson and Dan Wesson. I put off buying an FA because I could get 2-3 others for the same money. I waited wayyyyy to long in life before I bought my first FA.
I still play with some double actions sure. But calling an SA nostalgic is like saying a single shot rifle of any type is out dated.

Caliber, 45 Colt is an easy one loads mild to wild.
I myself have become a .41 magnum nut.

Older model Vaquero in 45 colt or 357, in stainless. Go for a convertable if you can find one (45 colt/45acp or 357mag/9mm). New version would be OK,but I at least prefer the larger size frame of the older vaquero vs. the new vaquero
Then possibly a Freedom arms.

Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt and 4 3/4" barrel makes a great field gun. Mine is one I restored from a rusted one that I chopped to 4 3/4" and fitted a Bisley style hammer for less reach. Carry is easy for field work and is quite accurate. Enough "thump power" for about anything you might encounter.
