Sun shades for March Scopes ?

Hi All,

Can anyone give information as to what to use for a sun shade for a March scope and where to obtain this?

Thanks

Peter.

Never seen a camera with a riflescope type of sunshade.

Are you talking about filters, or sunshades?
And what 'standard' threading are you referring to?
Would it be a standard used by Leupold for their Alumina line of accessories?

Hi Guys,

I got some help from Hobie at Kelbly's and the scope takes a 55mm telephoto lens hood. The pitch for the threads is 0.75 so it is a metric thread. Here is the link Hobie sent me -

The only issue I have is that the depth of the lens hood for a camera is not as long as you might want for a telescopic sight.

Shiraz Balolia has done a step down adaptor for his NF Benchrest scope shade which is a great idea. I have added a photo Shiraz sent me as an attachment. This was a lengthy job as the NF is an imperial thread and the March scope is metric but I reckon there would be a definite demand for something like this as these scopes are most likely to be bought by guys who have a NF Benchrest scope.

Anyway, my thanks to all who have helped me on this.

Peter.

Just keep in mind: Sun Shades trap air inside that eventually heats up and adds to mirage. You wont find them being used in benchrest competition for that very reason. You're better off with a small umbrella attached to a bench as a sun deflector.

I was going to say the same thing. Mike Ratigan mentions that in his book as well.

Not sure what Peter is using this scope for but if it is for benchrest, where we shoot from under a roof, a sun shade is not necessary and can be detrimental. It adds weight to the bell of the scope for one thing and traps air inside of it and right in front of the objective lens. If used for benchrest, most of us put a mirage shield over the top of the barrel. This can be as simple as a piece of target taped to the bottom of the scope and the top of the barrel near the muzzle or it can be a venetian blind type of mirage deflector that is Vel-Croed to the barrel.
