Suggestions for accurate .45 ACP plinking loads?

I bought a lightly used Sig 1911 Nightmare with the shorter 4.1" barrel. If you have any solid accurate loads for this pistol please chime in. I have range pickup brass for now till the Starline order I placed gets out of backorder status. I bought 200 gr Sig made by Sierra jacketed bullets for home protection but looking for lead or plated lead for less expensive fun, thanks to all! I`m pretty bound to the 200 grain weight.

200g Lead SWC over 3.8g VV N310. LaserCast bullets are hard to beat.

Its a light, extremely accurate load, I’ve shot thousands in my wad guns in bullseye matches.

Youll probably need a lighter recoil spring.

Possibly a pound or partial pound of Bullseye on hand and 2 pounds of N320. I will check my local store for the N310. Thank you both!

I have some Acme 200 SWC powder coated that like 5gr of AA#2 @ around 850fs in range pickup brass with either RP 2 1/2 or the red box Winchester WMGLP primers. I've been as high as 5.8 gr @ 980fps, but the lower charge shoots tighter in a Springfield Range Officer.

These are the bullets...

4.5grns of HP38 is my current Bullseye load in my Kimber 45ACP Gold Match. Makes about 810FPS with a cast 200grn SWC (Meister). Very positive and reliable ejection. Would probably stand a tad less powder to get velocities to the 770FPS range but it's working so I'm disinclined to mess w/it.

5 grns 700X 185 swc was my fathers favorite load, National match pistol shooter, his claim to fame was missing the Olympics by one X. said he loved the 700X for loading the .45
So he needed 701X? Just kidding

I just found several 1 pounders of Scot 453. Short search for data says use 452AA, and Nitro 100. When I bought it was told to use AA#2 data

I've read some posts and I have no better load recommendations but when loading light pinker make sure to do a double check for double charged cases.

I used to shoot a lot of .45 ACP. I recommend Vihtavuori N320 and Precision polymer-coated bullets. I probably tried 8-9 powders, including Win 231, Clays, Bullseye, Titegroup, AA#5. Nothing was more accurate than N320 and it was much cleaner than the other powders mentioned.

After trying numerous powders, I found VV N320 delivered the best combination of accuracy, easy metering, consistency, clean burning qualities, and low muzzle flash. My gun has proven exceptionally accurate using N320 with bullets from 180 grains to 230 grains -- it will shoot as accurately as some expensive customs I’ve tried. At right is 5-round group I shot offhand at 10 yards with my 5″ S&W 1911.

NOTE: The bullet hole edges are sharp because I was using semi-wad-cutters, and the target paper is thick. Rounds were loaded with Vihtavuori N320 and 200-grain SWCs from Precision Bullets in Texas. I shoot Precision's coated bullets in many pistol calibers. These projectiles are accurate and they seem to reduce fouling in my pistol barrels. You can learn about them in this video:

The polymer-coated bullets are much cheaper than jacketed bullets, are very accurate, but foul way, way less than ordinary lead bullets. See: Precision Bullets Website

Pros and Cons of Different Powders for the .45 ACP
This Editor has personally tried out eight or more different powders for the .45 ACP. Bullseye works but it is very dirty (both smoke out the barrel and sooty powder fouling on case). Though it otherwise burns clean, Titegroup leaves a singular (and nasty) high-temp flame streak on your brass that is hard to remove. AA #5 is a good choice for progressive press newbies as you use more powder so a double charge will (usually) be obvious. I like AA #5 but N320 was more accurate. Clays burns clean but some powder measures struggle with flake powders like this. WW 231 offered excellent accuracy and metered well, but it kicked out sparks with little pieces of debris that would hit me in the face. Who wants that?

I personally tried all the powders listed above with lead, plated, and jacketed bullets. After testing for accuracy, consistency, and ease of metering, I selected VV N320 as the best overall performer.

A good cast 200 SWC and Bullseye is hard to beat, start at 3.6 grains. You will likely end up around 3.8 if you are running full power main and recoil springs. If Bullseye doesn't meter well I think you need to change to a new powder measure, I've never had it vary in the measures I have used. With a 17# main and 11-14# recoil spring the 3.6 load is so nice to shoot it's silly. And, maybe most importantly, it SMELLS great LOL. Clays meters flawlessly through the Dillon and I've shot many pounds of it as well. Super clean and accurate, again around that 3.6 charge weight. N320 is almost as clean for me, a bit more consistent in varying temps, and is more forgiving in different powder measures than flake. It used to be a lot more money than Clays or Bullseye but now it seems they are closer together. I've not ever chased the end of accuracy in 45, in action shooting it just isn't necessary, and all of the above powders will easily hold the upper A as far as you can shoot in a good pistol.
