Suggestions for .338 Lapua Loads

Hi Guys,

I'm new to reloading. In fact, I just ordered my gear yesterday so please excuse the
newbie questions. I want to reload for my Savage BA110 .338 Lapua Magnum. I'm sure
the reloading manual that comes with the RCBS kit will have info but I wanted
to get first hand expierenced reloaders opinions & advice.

I've been shooting both 250gr. and 300gr. factory ammo and would like to try reloading
both these size bullets. Any suggestions as to what brand, model I should use?

What size primers?

Finally, powder?

I'll be using my once fired Lapua Brass.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

My barrett 98 likes 300 gn scanars, 90 gns H-1000. rem 9 1/2 mag primers all sitting in lapua brass. A semi-hot load but not extreme, no signs of pressure but as always start low & work up. Got a couple of friends one uses retumbo with 250 scanars in an AI the other runs reloader 25 & 300 sierras in an AR-30. Don't know specific load data but if you want them I'll get them. My suggestion is to try a couple of combinations as my rifle seems to only like rem primers. Go figure. Anyways good luck. Enjoy the boom!

I have a DTA in .338 Lapua Mag that likes 88.5 gn. of VV N-165, F-215M, 250 gn. Scenar bullet sitting on top of a Lapua case. As always start your load development lower than what works for others and work up. This load in my rifle shows no pressue signs and will shoot .5 MOA.

I have a Sako TRG 42 in this awesome cartridge and I'm shooting 300 grain Bergers with Reloader 25. This load shoots a three shot group around 1/4 moa.

I'm looking for a load for my Sako 42 .338 for the heavier weight bullets. What are you using i.e powder and weight?

Thanks

R-25, Retumbo and H-1000 are all good powders. I have found with several rifles that H-1000 with a 215 match primer and a 300 SMK have shot well. Start low and don't push the Savage too hard, it seems to be that they often pressure out early.

In my testing Reloader 33 gave me better velocity and better accuracy then H 1000 and Retumbo, which are the go to powders for the Lapua. I got 3000 feet in my Lapua Improved with the Reloader 33 and had no pressure. Where with the H1000 I had pressure signs starting at 2900. I could get more with the 33 but stopped because 3000 was all I could shoot with first generation 300 Berger. The accuracy was great as it shot 7 shots in 3.5 inches at 1000 yards. Matt PS the Berger 300 grain bullets worked great.

Mine is an Improved version so you would have to start lower. I shot 103 grains of RE 33 and got 2993 ave, velocity. When I shot H1000 I was only at 2900 with 97 grains and was sticky on the bolt. Everybody seems to be getting more velocity with Reloader 33 and the people I have talked with get 100 to 150 more fps. The gun really shot good in hunting season and the cold temperature didn't seem to affect the click chart. We killed 4 bucks with 4 shots and the ranges were from 420 to 550 yards. The Alliant reloading book calls for 97.5 grains with a 300 Sierra in a 338 Lapua. I used 215 Federal primers the same as the Alliant manual uses. Start low and work up. A friend of mine is getting almost 3000 with a straight 338 Lapua Savage rifle. PS the Berger bullets worked great. This is with Lapua brass which takes pressure better than other brands. Matt

90-95 gns of H-1000 under a 250-300 gn Berger, Federal LRM Match primers and Lapua brass.

92 gns under a 300 keeps the bullet supersonic out to 2050-2100 yards.

loading from the magazine I had best results with the 300 Scenar and 92 grs Retumbo,,loading single the 300 Berger OTM`s and 93 grs Retumbo was best,,

if shooting less than 1500 yards the 250SMK and H1000 worked very well,

that was before RL33 hit the market and I never went back and tried it but lots of people love RL33 with the 300`s

I have the Sako TRG-42 in a XLR Chassis system. I shoot Lapua Brass, Berger OTM 300 grain pointed bullets over 94 grains of Retumbo with a Federal 215 primer. Load to magazine length. WARNING...WARNING...that is a safe load in my rifle. Please, Please reduce by at least 10% and work your way up.....I have made hits out to 2160 yards with this load here in Georgia. It is a MOA load...even at distance.

With my savage 110 hs precision shooting berger 300 grain Hunter elite. 88gn of h-1000, F-215 primer. I had to load longer than the mag to get it to shoot. Use lapua brass!
This was at 1,000 yards. Not too bad for a factory rifle.

My Savage likes 97.5 grains of reloader 33 behind a sierra 300 grain pill and will get you to a mile with no problems..You know the drill start low and work up..Also remember to keep them all in the center..
