Thank you to all that gave me advice on sights and reduced loads for my 686 w/5" barrel. I was able to go to the range yesterday. I'm impaired a little, walking very far is difficult, and my walkers wheels don't roll well in gravel. I was able to park very near the benches, and set up a target at 25 yards. I was the only one able to brave the weather, 40ish degrees.
The first 3 shots were all in the same spot, I have rifles that don't shoot that well. BUT, they were 8" low. Rim Rock 125 gr w/4.0 Uniq. Just as some responded the Uniq is very dirty. The 130gr. Bad Man shot about 41/2" low. Eight inches is a lot of cranking on that short screw, I may need to change the rear. I've got the HIVIZ green dot on the front and an XS wide V (w/ white line) on the rear, they show up quite well for these old eyes. Next I shot my S&W 617 w/4" barrel. It has the HIVIZ green and the black V rear that Brownell's sell. It shot about 2" high, using CCI standard velocity. I was shooting with my arms and hands well supported, the target was 3" orange circle on a 1'' grid. I was trying to see where the sights shot, not my finger. The windage was 'right on' and I could see the sights. I know this is something I can do, have some success (my definition of success), enjoyment and fun. Very soon I'll be shooting aardvarks and bench rest from the hip. (just setting some goals) I'll be changing powder and be at the gunsmith discussing sight heights today and the loading bench tonight. Again thanks to the wonderful folks that offered help. And thanks to Bill for that great S&W 617.
