Subsonic .308 Win loads

Going to play around with some IMR TrailBoss powder with some Sierra 150gr SPT bullets for my .308 Win. Due to the supply shortages, I'm not sending any 175 SMKs down range. Now is the perfect time to experiment with handy odd stuff. Anyone have any legitimate data?????

You will have fun. I like a 154-178 gr lead FP bullet with between 7-10 grs of Trailboss. Depends on velocity you want. Use your chrony or just keep dropping load till no sonic crack. I like to think of it a the most accurate pistol round I have now....haha.

Google reduced loads in the .308 winchester.I have and there is alot of imfo out there.

Thats pretty much the way I look at it too.....fun with well defined limitations. One's ability to take care of coyotes (and other pests) without bothering one's neighbors, when you live close to the city limits. Oh so fun.

Why not go heavier? Do you not have the spin to stabilize? If you are going to slow the round way down you should increase the weight if you want more lethality. IMO I shot 220 gr and sometimes the 208 gr. My load is 12 gr.TB. 1010 fps CCI large Rifle and Lapua brass.

i shoot the 175's with 10.5 of TB and CCI large rifle magnums.. 1076 fps... One problem I had with the lighter bullets was stabilizing the bullet. Just at 75 yards they were sideways going thru the target.. Good luck with it.. Lots of fun.. Honestly, I am having a hard time sending 175 SMK's downrange at 1075 fps... It just don't seem right.. LOL

I had the same problem with my factory 1-10 twist with the longer bullets. I called Shilen and got a 1-7 twist and it took care of the problem. God luck.

I use Hornday's 170 gr. 30-30 bullet. Thin jacket. I also shoot Hornady's Whisper 208 load in a 10 twist. I know it's not supposed to work but it does in my Black Out bolt gun.

The Hornady 180 gr. RN shot the best for me in my 11.25 twist barrel, over 9.8 gr. of Trail Boss. I drilled out the flash holes on my brass to 9/64" and used F215M primers for better/consistent ignition. The RN bullets have a higher stability factor than spritzers. Lots of fun, but be careful of ricochets.
Make sure you test them on cardboard before you attach your can, one through the side of your can ruins the fun.

There is a ton of load data for cast bullets in the 30 caliber rifles. It is not specific to subsonic but the heavier bullets are easier to get the low velocities you are looking for.

10.7 of TB w/a 168. Don't know if that's subsonic or not. Haven't shot it for group yet, but it dings a piece of steel really well. Fun stuff!

HDXR750,while cast in a .308 can be a real shooter, check match results in CBA competition.....

The general consensus is,don't mix jacketed and cast in a barrel.Just like some brrls copper foul more than others, pretty much the same can be said for leading a brrl.

The problem is one, building on top of the other.

I've been runnin a 14 twist 22-250 as a straight cast brrl.50 rounds @2600 fps sees ZERO leading.Have a cpl moa loads that went to pot the other day.Air density is "probably" the reason.Figured it was due for cleaning....waste of time,it was spotless.

We're right at the point with 22 CF's that they are almost,no lube.Leading is non existent. But this isn't a "casual" loading situation. You have to decide, one or the other (jacketed vs cast) on a barrel.

As posted above,I just use 30-30 jacketed RN for reduced loads in larger cased .30's.Best of luck,BW.

I shoot a lot of Sierra 125 and 150 SPT in my 308's using reduced loads of H4895 for general target practice and informal 100yard matches at club. While not sub sonic, I'm loading down to about 2300 to 2400 f/s. Pleasant to shoot even in a sporter weight rifle and accuracy respectable at under 1 moa at 100 yards (i.e. groups range in the .65 to .85)
